Hodgson: Expectation Is A Dangerous Word

22 December 2017

Having guided the club out of the bottom three with last week’s victory at Leicester City Roy Hodgson has received deserved plaudits for the work he has achieved since moving to Selhurst but his original targets remain the same.

He is the first to admit though that he is not surprised at what has been achieved as he knows the quality of the group he works with every day but even so he is a great admirer of what the club have against their name on the points tally coming up to the turn of the year.

“The last few games have probably exceeded our realistic thoughts on what might have been possible and over the last seven games have overachieved in respect of the number of points we have taken from those matches.

“Expectation is a dangerous word because we expect quite a lot from them and we think there are some good quality players in the squad and are looking for quite big things from the group. I don’t like to say it has exceeded my expecatations but with no points after seven games and someone said you would have 17 points after 18 games, I would have said that is not too bad for a return.”

With the festive set of fixtures to include home matches against Arsenal and Manchester City the task doesn’t get any easier but the experienced boss is keen to impress upon his squad that whoever are the opponents the train of thought going into the game must be the same.

“We have got to keep going because we are still a long long way away from 40 points and we must go into each game knowing it will be another tough Premier League game where we are going to be tested to the limit. Our opponents will want to win every bit as much as us and we will have to give a good performance if we are going to get something out of each game and that will be key in our preparation."
