Scott Dann played seventy minutes of pre-season action as the club’s participation in the Asia Trophy got underway in Hong Kong. A 2-0 reverse against Liverpool was the outcome but the defender was pleased to be back in action.
“It was tough as it was our first game of pre-season but it was good to get back playing. It was a difficult match against a top side and having to contend with the weather conditions out here. It was enjoyable to be back out there and hopefully as a squad we can get fitter as the weeks go on.”
This was the first match under Frank de Boer playing the new system of three at the back and Dann knows the squad is looking to transfer the work from the training ground into game time.
“We have worked on it since the first day he came in and that is the way he wants us to play, it’s been enjoyable working on the system in training but it is about replicating that out on the pitch.
“He is passionate about us playing in this way so out on the training ground we can work on it but as always it’s about the players taking on the responsibility and going into matches knowing that we need to learn and keep improving on this style.”
It maybe only three weeks into pre-season but already the manager is making it clear on what is expected from his squad with preparation stepping up for the new season.
"I think he can come across as quietly spoken but he's obviously passionate and he's been a top player in his career. When he's on the training ground, he's not quite as calm. He expects things to be done the way he wants and everyone has to buy into that. Hopefully, we can keep getting better and improve and make that system a good one for us."
