Ahead of tomorrow’s Premier League Asia Trophy game against Liverpool, Palace boss Frank de Boer has been speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference, where he confirmed that Jason Puncheon would be the Eagles’ captain for the upcoming campaign.
As well as that announcement, he also talked about a number of other topics, including transfer speculation and the challenges facing his side tomorrow when they come up against Jurgen Klopp’s Reds outfit.
Here you can read all the manager’s quotes from the session in full:
Taking on Liverpool: “It’s a test for the ideas that you’ve tried to put across and doing what we’ve trained on for the past two-and-a-half weeks, so it’s important that we continue in that way and we improve on that, and also the physical aspect is very important as you get games under your belt. It is very important that you play games, especially against an opponent this strong as you can see how far away you are.
“They will want to get better physically and also improve the shape that they want to use, so I expect them to play how they always play: very aggressive and between the lines if they can.”
Hopes for the new season: “I am looking forward to the 12th August and playing at Selhurst Park, and see the fans because I have heard great things about them. I am looking forward to be managing in the Premier League and I will put all my effort in to try and help us have a great season, because we want to build Crystal Palace into a very solid club - that is our goal. If we implement the ideas that I want us to play this season, then hopefully then we can look up rather than down.”
The way he wants Palace to play: “We talk almost every day about what we expect from everybody individually and what their roles are attacking-wise and defensively, and the squad understand what I want.
“We are not in a position like the big clubs, we have to work really hard as a team and if we do that and the eagerness to work together then I think we can make it difficult for every club.”
Transfers: “We are looking to add quality to the squad and if it’s done and it’s settled then you will be the first to hear. We are looking to buy players that will add to the higher standard of the squad and we have to wait.”
Jairo Riedewald’s proposed move: “No it is not done, it’s a very good possibility for us. I know Jairo very well but it is not done.”
Rumours linking Christian Benteke with a move: “The only thing that I know is that he is happy here and I really want him to stay because he made a great impact last season, especially in the second half, so we don’t want to sell him.”
Ruben Loftus Cheek’s arrival: “He’s a quality injection and he has shown already when he played for Chelsea that he is a very talented player. I think he has skills and a good physical presence and he can be useful for our club.
“It wasn’t a surprise [that Chelsea allowed him to go to Palace] because players of his age have to play games and I think they think it’s good development for him if he goes to a club like Crystal Palace. He also doesn’t have to travel very far, so it benefits both sides.”
