Big Sam: Preparation Will Be Key

20 May 2017

The dust may not have settled on this season but Sam Allardyce is already putting plans in place for the next one and the player’s preparation will continue through the summer with their own fitness programme to ensure they are ready for when they report back in July.

Sam and his backroom team's planning is well underway and he hopes that the good finish to this season will lead onto a good start to the new campaign but stresses the work done before the new season begins is going to be crucial to things going better for the club next time round.

“It will all be about carrying on where we left off this season by getting the players even more prepared for the start of next season than they are finishing this one.

“They will have training programmes while they are away from the club. A pre-season planned out to get them match fit for the start of the new season and a big push on trying to prevent as many injuries next season as we've had this season.

“And then it’s about recruitment and the best players we can possibly find for the money that we have available, and that's a real tough task as always in the current market.

“I will try a few of the youngsters we already have, bring them into the squad for the entire pre-season, play them in the games, we've got some very good games coming up, and will see whether they can cope, if they can then that will be great to introduce one or two players into the squad who may be able to contribute throughout next season.”

A big subject at the end of a season within football is always about who can be added to a squad that can improve the current players a manager has to choose from and as the summer months go on the Palace boss will call on the planning that has been in place within the club’s recruitment department for some time now.

“Recruitment started weeks and weeks ago, what we've got to do is the final checks, and that revolves around us having a look at the games the targets have played.

"And we'll look at those targets as long as we know the availability of the player or a rough estimate about how much he will cost. We've got to find out those details first before we spend a lot of time researching those players.

"There will be a few players leaving the club that we will decide on next week. And there might be a few players that want to leave the club but it will only be for the right price.

“The more players you've got with the talent they have the more you want to keep them these days. That means the less you need to recruit every year. The more you need to recruit the harder it gets, the less you have to recruit the better it gets.

"We live in the richest market in the world and we have to pay top dollar for the players and that's a big pressure on any football club.”
