Hodgson: Team News, The Task Ahead & Points Target

23 November 2017

Following Roy Hodgson’s pre-match press conference on Thursday we bring you a selection of quotes from the subjects that he faced questions about.

Injury News:

"Our injury situation is very good at the moment. Chung Lee is still recovering from the kick he received in our game at Bristol five weeks ago and Connor Wickham is still out but apart from that everyone else is available."

Looking Ahead To Games Coming Up:

"Every game is an opportunity of course because the same numbers of points are available to the winning team.  We are aware of the fact that to climb off the bottom of the table we have to win matches, on paper it’s easier to play against teams that are closer to you than those right up the top of the table but I never think that you are going to play a team where points are easy to come by.  I not only respect every team we play but I also fear them in the sense that they as capable of taking the three points from the game as we are."

Task Facing His Squad In Weeks Ahead:

"We’ve got five points from the last five games; if we had 12 points from 12 games we wouldn’t be quite as disappointed.

"We are fighting the lost cause in the fact of that we can’t get back what happened in those first seven games with no points and scored no goals.

"We’ve always been aware it will take more than just a wave of the magic wand to put that right.

"We take some heart from the five points in five games because we think in those we have done enough in terms of the way we played to get more points in those five.

"And we are fully aware we have got to continue in the same vein as we have done in those last five games and hope that lady luck will be a bit kinder to us than it has to us in several of these recent matches."

Do You Think About A Points Target That Will Be Needed In May:

"My concern always is the rather simple and pragmatic one, I try and prepare for the next game and I don’t give as much thought to these subjects like how many points it is going to take to survive as other people who are statistically orientated.

"My viewpoint is very simple, we have got to work on the basis that every game we play gives us the opportunity for those points and we have really got to start doing enough to get them. It will be nice if we got them sooner rather than later.

"Sometimes, and I have had the experience at Fulham, the points can come right at the very end but we don’t apportion points to games, it seems everyone else does. I don’t do that myself, I don’t say we should beat these because they are close to us and can’t beat those. We prepare and go out believing we can get the three points even if, on paper, the team we are facing is arguably stronger we are or the combined expertise of the football world gives us no chance."
