Christian Benteke came off the bench during the 5-0 defeat of Leicester on Saturday and was given the opportunity to take an added time penalty by Luka Milivojevic after being fouled by Harry Maguire.
The striker wasted no time at the end of the match to thank the skipper for giving him the chance to come up against Ben Hamer in the Leicester goal.
“It was very nice of them, the first thing I did after the goal was to say thank you to Luka because he said did I want to take the kick and obviously I said yes so thanks to letting me have the penalty. The overall performance this afternoon was really good.”
As he stepped up to take the spot kick he could hear the fans cheering his name and also added his appreciation to the Palace fans in the stands.
“They know I have been through a hard time, the first time in my career since I have been in England but they stick behind me and I am grateful for that.”
Away from his goal the Belgian international had no doubts about the level of performance that was produced to get the vital three points.
“It was a really big performance today; really from the start we played our game and fully deserved this win.”
