A first half that lived up to the all the expectation of a first top flight meeting at Selhurst Park between Palace and Brighton in 37 years saw the home side take the honours in a five goal thriller.
Zaha scored the first of the five goals to give Palace the best possible start in the fifth minute and then just nine minutes later James Tomkins extended the lead.
Glenn Murray reduced Brighton's deficit but Zaha soon got on the end of Luka Milivojevic's cross before the half hour.
The fifth of the game came from Jose Izquierdo but with no more goals in a tense second half for Hodgson's side means his side go up to 16th in the table.
