Levi Lumeka’s 77th minute proved to be the deciding goal in Friday’s Development match at Selhurst Park as Palace beat Huddersfield Town 2-1.
A late goal reduced the margin of victory but the 19 year-old was pleased to see the side maintain their push for the league title.
“It was a hard game but an important one for us because we get closer to winning the title. They were a good team and we didn’t enjoy as much possession in the game as we normally do at Selhurst but today was a different type of game, it wasn’t our best performance but we still got the result at the end.”
Lumeka got on the end of a ball through from Kian Flanagan and made no mistake as he fired the ball into the roof of the net.
“I looked across but no one was really in position so I had to come in and give the keeper the look and luckily the shot went in,” said Lumeka as he took time out to also praise the contribution of the other goalscorer, 16 year old Rob Street, making his first appearance for the Under 23s.
“He done well today, he held the ball up and ran the channels and got the goal.. It wasn’t easy for him, but this first game, first goal and gives him experience of playing in the under 23 team.”
Lumeka’s early season form saw him make his professional debut for the Eagles in a Premier League game against Burnley in September 2017 in a campaign that the striker looks back on with much satisfaction.
“This season started off well for me and ever since making my debut I think I have continued moving upwards, as a team we have realised our potential and knew we had good players around us and we are all realising our potential.”
