Rob Street was handed his debut for the under 23 side by Richard Shaw and he didn’t disappoint the boss with a good performance on day one and the opening goal in the 2-1 defeat of Huddersfield Town.
The 16-year-old was in the right place at the right time when from close range he was on hand to hit the back of the net after a ball was driven across the face of goal.
“It was a tough game and in the first half we didn’t really create too many chances but in the second we pressed a bit more and both Levi and I were pleased to take our opportunities,” said Street but he admitted he didn’t know too much about his first goal on the Selhurst turf.
“I don’t know what it came off but I will take it.
“It was a great experience as having never played at Selhurst Park or even been on the pitch, It was a lot more physical than I thought it would have been but I just kept working hard and it was good both for me and the team that we got our rewards."
It’s been quite a progression for the youngster and is thankful for the faith the Palace coaching staff have shown in him during his short time at the club.
“I came on trial and after six weeks they signed me and they have showed a lot of faith but it’s all gone really quick for me since then. I was with the 16s at the start of the season and then into Paddy’s (McCarthy) under 18 team, I have been working really hard to try and get as many minutes as I could under my belt and I’m really pleased that I was given an opportunity today.”
