James McArthur was disappointed after the match in a contest saw the points going Watford’s way but there were opportunities which could have seen Palace getting more rewards from their afternoon’s work at a rain soaked Vicarage Road.
“It was a tough game for us which we knew it was going to be. The first half we controlled but the second half was a poor start from us for the first 15 minutes, which cost us,” said McArthur who paid tribute to Hornets goalkeeper, Ben Foster, but also felt that the side need to take the chances when they come along at this level.
“I had an opportunity which I should have scored but he’s had a good game but we need to be more clinical in front of goal.
“It’s about us trying to get in position to try and score and today we had numerous opportunities but we’ve not taken them and even though the goalkeeper has played well, from our point of view we’ve conceded two cheap goals. The first one obviously is a great finish but from us in midfield it’s disappointing to let him get into that position whilst the second one is a bit fortunate to go into the top corner.”
The side couldn’t repeat that first away game victory but the 30 year old was keen to take the positives and can see the side moving in the right direction.
“This is the Premier League, it’s tough, and all about fine margins. We could have scored right at the death and we have four points but we need to just keep going and playing well, if we do that we will push up the table.
“Last year we were 11th but you look back at two games to go and we were still in a relegation battle. The Premier League is the toughest in the world and top teams beat a lot of the bottom ones but those down the wrong end can also beat anyone in the league so we need to keep playing well and get the points on the board.”
After this league defeat its midweek cup action down at Swansea before Southampton visit Selhurst Park next Saturday afternoon with just one point to their name.
“Tough games but we need to take the good things and make sure we do better with the things which did wrong today and put on a good performance for our fans at home next Saturday.”
