Crystal Palace Ladies endured a disappointing defeat against club rivals Brighton and Hove Albion on Wednesday night in the FA Continental Tyres Cup game.

The Eagles fought determinedly throughout the match and were hampered by injury from kick-off, with six members of the starting 11 being unavailable due to various knocks.

A late consolation goal was all the side could earn, however, and they will now have to turn their attention back to upcoming league fixtures against Tottenham Hotspur Ladies and London Bees Ladies.

Brighton opened the game's scoring within 12 minutes, when Sophie Perry struck a shot at a strong Shannell Salgado but fired home the rebound to ensure her efforts weren't in vain.

Albion then enjoyed a series of further chances and were dominant throughout the game's opening half.

Megan Chandler pulled off an imperious challenge when Ellie Brazil broke through onto an unguarded goal, but even her efforts couldn't keep the hosts out much longer and Kate Natkiel scored in similar fashion to Perry, netting on the rebound to double Hope Powell's side's lead.

Jodie Brett then made it three when she found herself one-on-one with Salgado and decisively hit the back of the net in the 40th minute.

Brighton enjoyed another chance moments before half-time and Emily Simpkins was played through on goal only to send her effort wide of the post.

Natkiel then got her second of the day when she netted in the 64th minute, curling a well-hit left-footed strike beyond Salgado and Fliss Gibbons finished the game off when she bagged the Seagulls' fifth.

Chloe Burr then launched a shot at goal which ricocheted off the crossbar and was rewarded moments later for her stunning effort when she scored in the 85th minute to break Palace's deadlock late in the game.
