After Max Meyer was fouled by Kyle Walker inside Manchester City’s box it was time once again for Luka Milivojevic to step up for a penalty and he sent Ederson the wrong way to increase the visitors advantage, something they held on to take all three points in a 3-2 win at The Etihad Stadium.
“This result is very special, I am very proud and after the last game against Leicester at home we went on and got the win today. To be honest, you try to do something but you don’t expect a lot from these kind of games but when you score three goals here you can say you deserved to win,” said Milivojevic as he heaped praise on the second Palace goal, an excellent strike from 30 yards out by Andros Townsend.
“It was an amazing goal, one of the best I have seen in my career whilst I have been out on the pitch playing in a game".
Luka missed a spot-kick against City 12 months ago in a home draw but he made no mistake in front of the 800 Palace fans inside the stadium for this one and he is no doubt how importance that two goal buffer was to Roy Hodgson’s side.
“I was not nervous, I decided where I wanted to place the ball and I think that goal was massive because that going in gave us more confidence for the second half, Let’s say they possibly gave up a little bit after that goal but then they score late on which put a lot of pressure on us. It wasn’t an easy game but as I say we are all so proud of this victory and we now know the next game is massive for us. (against Cardiff City) I want to thank our fans and I think they deserved this victory.”
Palace’s work rate against the constant pressure from the home side had to be admired but the requirement of the defending side of the game was no more than the Eagles captain expected.
“You prepare in a different way because of the opponents, you see we had to defend a lot and we knew we would only have a few chances because this team don’t give you a lot of space but we convert two goals from the three or four counter attacks we had and what can you say when you come here and take three points against one of the best teams in the league."
Luka now heads into some celebration time but he hopes the games over the next seven days give the Palace following more Christmas cheer.
“I am going to celebrate with my family but we have two more games before the end of the year, both at home, and I am hoping we can give the fans more reasons to celebrate in those matches.”
