Wan-Bissaka On Excitement Of Debut Day

25 February 2018

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been at the club since he was eleven years old so his dream has always been to make his debut at Selhurst Park in the Premier League.

That dream was realised in Sunday’s game against Tottenham and he describes his emotion as one of shock and excitement when Roy Hodgson revealed his line up 24 hours before the game.

“I wasn’t nervous because I have been waiting for this for a long time, I tried to play it simple for the first fifteen as I was told to and then try and get through it for the whole game, and I enjoyed it.

“The day before when the line-up was named and the right back was me, I was in shock but excited at the same time.

“I got encouragement from everyone and they said to play with confidence and don’t feel under pressure and don’t be afraid."

The 20 year old will be pleased with his overall performance as he won 66.7% of his duels in a hardworking performance where he won 7 tackles, made 4 clearances and 4 interceptions in what turned out to be a disappointing result on the youngster’s first outing at this level.

“We fought very well, we tried our hardest to fight our way forward and do a good job defensively and I thought we were unlucky with the corner at the end of the game. The lads worked hard and I am happy to make my Premier League debut."

Last season Aaron moved to the defensive back line from the wing and is pleased how the transition has worked out. His performance in this derby defeat didn’t come as a surprise to the manager as he has kept a close eye on him in training and been encouraged by what he has seen at under 23 level.

"I need to prove to him what I can do and to make him trust you when he gives you the chance; I have been working hard and waiting for the chance.

“It’s been a big move (to change position) and I think I have done well with that and it was the right choice so I am happy with that decision.

He left the tunnel area proudly holding his match shirt and he has plans for where that will now take pride of place.

“I am going to get it framed and put it up at my mum’s house.”
