Roy Hodgson has a number of players who are unavailable for selection going into Saturday’s home match against Burnley and revealed at his pre-match press conference that Jeffrey Schlupp is set to have an operation.
He had to leave the action on Monday against Brighton after just 13 minutes and Andros Townsend is another who faces time out of action after also having to depart proceedings on the night with an injury.
“We have a lot of injuries at the moment, but we have what I think is a competitive starting XI and affects us mostly with regard to the players I can call on from the bench and are stretched to the limit and are badly wounded,“ said Hodgson as he revealed the expected extent of their absence.
“Both Jeffrey and Andros are on crutches. Jeffrey will have an operation on Monday, with him we are talking months rather than weeks. For Andros the news is slightly better, he doesn’t need an operation and his foot is in a boot but he is also on crutches. I would like to hope he will be closer to one month rather than months.
“Mamadou Sakho is improving slowly and moving in the right direction. Joel Ward is becoming much closer to returning, but is not ready yet and we also have our other long term injuries."
