Jeffrey Schlupp’s close range effort put Palace ahead in Saturday’s friendly at Oxford United and after the game he reflected on an outing for Roy Hodgson’s side that he felt would prove a big benefit as the squad continues their preparation for the start of the new season.
“It wasn’t an easy game, I thought we started really well but could have finished off the half a bit better but came back out and got the job done and obviously had the chance to work on our fitness.
“You want to get the competitive games in as soon as possible and we had a tough one today and you have to give credit to the opposition because they made it hard for us although we came through the test with another good win."
This game saw the 25 year play just in front of defender Patrick Van Aanholt and the midfield position is one Schlupp feels comfortable to take on.
“I have always said I would play anywhere that I am needed to and the manager has used me in midfield and I am really comfortable there. Whenever Wilf, myself and Patrick, just behind me, have played together the link up play has been good, we work at it in training and if that happens to be the left side going into the first games of the new season we are more than ready.“
Following the training camp in Sweden where the squad kicked off their pre-season programme it is now a time that Schlupp is looking forward to as the games take priority in the schedule as preparation moves up a level.
“We have still been working on fitness but now we are back from Sweden we have got quite a few games coming up so obviously even though fitness is a big side of it, for me getting the games in is the main thing. You can do as much running as you want but there is nothing to replace match fitness so you want to get in as many games as possible."
