Although he grabbed a brace against Halmstads from left-back, Patrick van Aanholt was happier about the fact that he got some much-needed minutes into his legs during Palace’s 6-1 victory.
The Dutchman netted twice in quick succession in the first half to put his team in control of proceedings, and continued his fine goalscoring form from last season which saw him find the net in three successive games.
However, despite grabbing a double to help round off the pre-season tour of Scandinavia in style, he is just hoping to ensure he is match-fit and ready to rediscover that form again by the time Palace visit Fulham on the opening day.
Reflecting on the win at Halmstads, he said: “It’s pre-season so it’s all about fitness, it’s not really about the games but it’s good to win 6-1 and get two goals. They were both nice goals that went into the same corner.
“You want the wingers to tuck in tight so the full-backs have got the space to go in behind, and that’s my strength. I’ve been doing it since I’ve been here and we all know it’s my strongest thing, so I just need to keep doing it.
“But as I said, it’s all about fitness and I’m pleased to have played 65 minutes – I could have played more. It’s all about picking up where I left off last season; obviously I’ve had a holiday and the battery is charged and I want to go again now because I’m ready.
“I’m happy – we’ve had a great time here. We’ve had some good training sessions and which have been hard, and two good games so it was nice to finish off with a nice win.”
