Palace defender Patrick van Aanholt was left feeling deflated once again, as Liverpool left south London with all three points thanks to a Mohamed Salah goal at the death. The Dutchman said: “We didn’t deserve to lose. We are disappointed, and I think we deserved a draw today.
“We started the game very well, [putting] balls in behind them and causing them problems. That’s why we got the penalty. After that we didn’t give away many chances. In the second half, they started to dominate more.”
The Eagles left-back had a blistering effort from a free-kick saved from Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius. But it was how the free kick was awarded that will no doubt claim a lot of column inches, as Sadio Mane – already on a yellow card - was clearly shown handling the ball whilst on the floor, but escaped without a second caution.
The Netherlands international said: “Andros got the ball off him, and he clearly handballed the ball. I don’t understand why it wasn’t a second yellow, but the referee made his decision and we have to get on with it.”
Van Aanholt and his team-mates travel to the south coast next Saturday, with the Eagles having just six games to secure Premier League status. "We go again. Bournemouth next week - and six games to go, so we'll see."
