Patrick Van Aanholt’s winning goal four minutes from time sealed Palace’s Premier League survival as the second half comeback gave Roy Hodgson’s side a deserved three points and the Eagles left back was delighted to be securing another top flight season in SE25.
“It feels good and most of all we are safe and ready for next season. We came here knowing it would be a tough game and knew we had to be at our best because they were always going to come at us. Fair play to them as in the first half they put us under pressure and we couldn’t play football at all and had to go with the long ball,” reflected Van Aanholt as he looked back on a strong second half as the side attacked the end where they were backed by the 3,000 travelling support.
“The second half we came out a different team and showed them that we could play while also scoring good goals as well.
“In the second we were fantastic, played our own football and gave a lot of give and goes with one and ones behind with Wilf and Andros, they worked their socks off. Christian then came on, a good striker who can bring an impact into the game and he did that today.”
The Netherlands defender made no mistake as the goalkeeper came out to close the space down and was pleased to be able to make the most of the chance to convert the opportunity.
“I saw the space and went forward and I saw Wilf so I had to hold my run a little bit and he played it and Shawcross played it back and I anticipated very well and played the ball between the goalkeeper’s legs."
