Hodgson: 'We Played Well Enough To Win The Game.'

25 November 2018

Roy Hodgson was full of praise for his side’s efforts at Old Trafford as the team secured a well-earned point.

However, the manager was left with a feeling that they had missed an opportunity to take all three points.

“We played well enough to win the game. It’s a bit disappointing and frustrating that at least one of the very good chances we created wasn’t given or the hair-fine offside that we saw the goal disallowed for wasn’t given, I think we were unlucky in that respect.

“We have been unlucky for a while now, but the performances have stayed at a very high level.

“Today we have given a good performance at Old Trafford. Where quite frankly it’s hard for teams to come and get points. This is normally a happy hunting ground for Manchester United.”

The Eagles defended well and kept United at bay, and one man who was a big factor in the side keeping the clean sheet was Wayne Hennessey. The Welshman received a great reception from the travelling fans after a string of fine saves and his performance did not go unnoticed from the manager.

“He’s been playing well for a long time, I thought he made an excellent save in the first half and apart from that I thought he was really good in dealing with those long balls coming in.

“When you can bring on Fellaini, Marcus Rashford and Sanchez, and you are getting those balls in there it’s a lot for the defenders to deal with. You need your goalkeeper to help you out and he did that extremely well.”

The Palace fans travelled in big numbers to Manchester and Hodgson wanted to give them plaudits for the way they support the team.

He said: “They are excellent. The one thing about Crystal Palace is that we should never forget it. We should never cease to praise them. We are enormously fortunate that we get that backing both home and away. They understand that it’s not easy for Crystal Palace Football Club to survive in this league. It’s not easy for us to come to Old Trafford and play the Tottenhams and Chelseas. It’s a tough ask. They understand that if they want to keep seeing us play these teams they need to keep backing the boys like they do.”
