Max Meyer made his full Premier League debut on Monday night, and it was a baptism of fire as Palace succumbed to a sucker punch goal at the death to leave the south coast without a point.
Such is the margin in the Premier League, which Meyer believes is a step-up from the German Bundesliga where he made his name.
Prior to Monday's opportunity in the starting berth, Meyer’s pitch time has been restricted to late substitute appearances and starts in the Carabao Cup. Yet he continues to receive rave reviews about his attitude and quality in training from manager Roy Hodgson.
Reflecting on his team’s early season performances, Meyer said during this week's Premier League media commitments: “I think in most of the games we’ve played good. We’ve had many chances, but we didn’t score – this is what we can improve for the next games. [Scoring goals] is the most important thing. When you don’t score, you cannot win the games.
“We played well in the second half [v Bournemouth], and in the end – it was unlucky. When we play like we did in the second half, we can win many games this season.”
Meyer was asked about how he has settled in to life in London, and said; “The first few weeks were very exciting for me. A new country, a new language, new team mates. It was not so easy for me, but now it’s very good. I have good fitness, and everyone in the team helps me so I feel good. At the start, I didn’t know so many players here – just four of five of them, so it was not easy but now it’s better, I know everyone. I know the club now, and enjoy playing here. London is an amazing, beautiful city. I enjoy it every day, it’s unbelievable.”
And the softly spoken German has high hopes for the season ahead: “I want to make the next step in my career, play good football here at Palace, to finish maybe in the top 10 this season, and to have fun. That’s the most important thing.”
