Patrick Van Aanholt goes into this weekend’s match against Newcastle United in confident mood on the back of the victory at Huddersfield Town last Saturday and having showed their character to come through a run of defeats he knows what their long term targets should be.
“We started the season brilliantly with a win against Fulham away then we came up against Liverpool, which was always going to be a difficult game. They are a tough team and hard to beat this season and that began a run of losing three games on the bounce. It was tough but we stuck together like we always do and went up to Huddersfield and got a win up there again and I was very happy about that.
“We want to finish as high as possible and we don’t want to end up like last year being involved in a relegation battle and the start has been ok, we have six points.”
The Eagles defender has been in south London since making the move from Sunderland in January 2017 and is happy with life down in SE25.
“I have enjoyed every single moment and I love this club, the fans are great and it’s just a great place to be and I think I have settled in very well from when I signed so I am very happy.”
The squad will be looking to build on their success at Huddersfield last week on Saturday afternoon as they come up against Newcastle, who only have one point from their opening five games. Van aanholt though will not be taking too much notice of this season’s form table when the action gets under way in this top flight encounter.
“We cannot under estimate them because they have had some tough games but they are a good side and have a good manager, Rafael Benítez, who is very experienced. I am looking forward to the game because it’s going to be good one.”
Wilfried Zaha has scored eight times in 10 league appearances and his goal sealed that victory last weekend and he is a player that the Netherlands international is a big admirer of.
“Everyone can see that Wilf is a brilliant player and I am very happy that he is in our team. He’s quick, strong and a fit player and a big plus for us. He has been here for a long time and the stats show how important he is to this club.”
