Benteke Available to Join Squad Facing Watford Tomorrow

11 January 2019

Roy Hodgson has spoken in his pre-match press conference today, discussing Crystal Palace's game against Watford which will take place at 15.00 at Selhurst Park tomorrow and provided an injury update on two of his players as he did.

While his squad has reduced in size over recent days due to outbound loans and transfers, Hodgson cautiously stated that his side has been boosted by the recovery of forward Christian Benteke, who has been out of first-team action since September for Palace.

While Benteke is unlikely to feature too heavily tomorrow, Hodgson did suggest that, if necessary, the Belgian would be on hand when called upon to join the squad.

He said, "Yes I guess he is [available], but obviously he’s short of match practice and the sharpness you get from playing. It would be a risk putting him in to some extent but he’s come through training very well so there’s no reason to write him off."

Turning his attention to another player who has suffered from injury of late, Hodgson expressed his commiseration surrounding the forced absence of left-back Pape Souare, who suffered from a dislocated shoulder against Grimsby Town last Saturday.

Hodgson elaborated, saying, "I was really disappointed with that, I said so after the game. Pape has done tremendously well after his accident. He’s been training every day for a year now. It was his chance on Saturday and I was really looking forward to seeing him play, but it only lasted 10-15 mins. He’ll come back, he’s strong physically and mentally."
