Crystal Palace women’s side lost 2-0 away at Sheffield United in what will be a bitter pill to swallow considering the game was goalless until 20 minutes from time.
The Blades’ Jade Pennock turned the game in United’s favour with the crucial opening goal, whilst also providing the assist for Ebony Salmon to score the second and vital goal of a game which saw the players contend with extreme weather conditions including hailstones despite the sun shining.
It could have been so different for Palace had the Eagles managed to take a huge chance right before half-time, however, Blades shot stopper, Fran Bentley - who was making her debut between the sticks for United - pulled off a fine reflex save from close range.
Early exchanges in the second-half saw a lot of the ball being played in the middle of the park, with chances few and far between the two teams, before Pennock broke the stalemate with an effort into the far corner around the 70th-minute mark.
Moments later, a first-time finish from Salmon was enough to curtail the Palace fightback. And things could’ve ended up even worse for Palace when Pennock came close to scoring her second, and United’s third, with a near replica of her game-opening strike.
Palace brought on Nash and Bryan after going two goals down, as they looked to try and salvage something from a game against a team close to them in the table, however, it wasn’t meant to be for the CPFC side.
The result leaves Palace Ladies in 10th position in the English Women’s Championship with three games of the season left to play against Manchester United, Charlton Athletic and Aston Villa.
Palace: Gillett, Butler (Nash 79), Nuttall, Holdaway, Mackenzie, Georgiou, Chandler (Bryan 75), Watling, Collins, Whinnett, Hinks. Subs not used: Davenport, Keogh, McRoberts.
