The U15 Floodlit Shield is part of the Premier League’s Youth Development Phase and is designed to provide more competitive matches than the regular U15 league, while also giving players the opportunity to compete for silverware.

Evening matches under floodlights and in varying weather conditions prepare the players for similar challenges as they progress to U18s, U21s, and senior football.

Unlike the U15 Floodlit Cup, which Palace have won multiple times – including in 2023 with familiar faces Charlie Walker-Smith, Jasper Judd, and Benji Casey in the squad – the Shield represents a fresh chance to win a trophy and gain valuable competitive experience.

This season, Palace faced a challenging Floodlit Cup group with Chelsea, Fulham, and Brentford. The young Eagles finished third, securing two wins – including a thrilling 4–2 comeback against Chelsea – and a draw. 

They ended just a point shy of second-place Fulham, narrowly missing out on progression due to goal difference.

While this meant they did not progress into the Floodlit Cup knockout stages, it allowed them to enter the Floodlit Shield, where they have impressed in successive rounds.

Josh Bednash’s side advanced to the final with victories over Bournemouth in the round of 16, Leicester in the quarter-finals, and West Ham in a tightly contested last-four clash.

Palace took the lead inside 15 minutes when Henry Armstrong delivered a free-kick from just inside West Ham’s half to the far post, with Frank Oduro timing his header perfectly to guide the ball past the diving ‘keeper.

West Ham pressed for an equaliser but were repeatedly denied by ‘keeper Fletcher Jerden’s heroics, an Under-14 stepping up to the U15s.

On 30 minutes, Armstrong recovered a cleared ball and picked out Oduro, who bundled it into the path of Fortune Edokpaye, who calmly stroked home from close range to double the lead.

Jerden continued to shine with crucial saves, keeping Palace ahead. The second half was evenly matched, and although West Ham scored in added time, Palace held on to secure a hard-fought 2–1 victory.

The young Eagles will now face Manchester United in the Floodlit Shield Final, a familiar opponent they will also meet at U18 level in the FA Youth Cup and Premier League Cup this month.

The Eagles were leading 1-0 at the VBS Community Stadium, with only seconds remaining on the clock.

Georgia Brougham lofted a high ball across goal to try and salvage a draw for the Tricky Trees - but Yañez managed to claw the ball away from goal.

Palace cleared their lines and the whistle blew, sealing another clean sheet and another win for the Eagles.

Walker-Smith is a modern centre-back, comfortable in possession and known for his trademark marauding runs from defence.

Having begun the campaign with the Under-18s, he has since established himself at Under-21 level, making 29 appearances across the age groups thanks to a series of standout performances.

The defender spent the March international break with Wales Under-19s, featuring in a friendly against the USA in Spain. Cymru were beaten 4–0 at Oliva Nova Resort as part of their preparations for this summer’s UEFA U19 EURO Finals, which will be hosted in north Wales.

Reflecting on the experience, Walker-Smith said: “Yeah, it was good. Obviously, everyone else is doing their qualifying rounds right now, but we were building up with a friendly.

“I think there were a few new players being tested and some new coaching staff as well, so it was about getting to grips with everything. But no, it was really enjoyable. I think we’re ready to get into the final stages of it.”

Attention now turns back to domestic action, where Nottingham Forest provide the next test for our young Eagles. Forest currently sit 17th on 23 points from 19 games, just outside the play-off places and leading the cross-category play-off positions.

They arrive in improved form, having recorded a 3–0 victory over Newcastle United last time out – their second successive win – to keep their hopes of a top-16 finish alive ahead of their final league fixture against Palace.

Prior to that, Forest had endured a difficult run, losing five consecutive matches against Southampton, Manchester City, Liverpool, Middlesbrough and Sunderland.

Walker-Smith is confident Palace are well prepared for the challenge ahead.

“Confident. I think the team has been looking really good in training. We’ve done our work on them and on ourselves. The whole team is feeling confident and looking forward to the game.

I expect they’ll come out a bit more gritty now considering their recent results, but we’ve shown plenty of times that we can handle different types of tests. We’ll take it as it comes and adapt to whatever they bring.”

You should be going out to win every game

The race for the play-offs remains tight, with six teams still capable of catching Palace. Sunderland are level on 28 points from 19 games, trailing only on goal difference, while Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa all remain within striking distance with games in hand.

Wolves and Stoke City, both on 22 points, also retain a mathematical chance of closing the gap.

However, Middlesbrough can no longer catch the young Eagles, leaving Palace in a strong position heading into the final two fixtures.

A point against Nottingham Forest would be enough to mathematically secure a play-off place, while a victory would not only confirm qualification but also boost Palace’s chances of finishing in the top eight – and potentially securing home advantage in the opening round of the elimination play-offs.

Despite that, Walker-Smith’s focus remains firmly on winning.

“I think if you need a point, you don’t need a point. Whether you’re secure or not, you should be going out to win every game.

“Obviously, right now a point would be enough, but we should look at it as needing to win, not just this game but every game.”

Having only returned from international duty midway through the week, the defender also acknowledged the quick turnaround.

“It’s a bit of a tight turnaround, but that’s the life of a footballer. You’ve got to be able to deal with that.

“You’d be more frustrated if you came back and weren’t involved, so you can’t really complain.”

Palace Under‑21s wing‑back **Rio Cardines** featured for 83 minutes as Trinidad and Tobago opened the series with a 4–1 defeat to Venezuela on Friday (27th March), helping his side remain competitive against opponents ranked 47 places higher in the FIFA standings.

Despite the scoreline, the wing-back delivered an encouraging performance during a strong opening hour, with the Soca Warriors taking the lead before Venezuela turned the contest around.

In their second fixture, Cardines was directly involved in both goals in a thrilling 2–2 draw with Gabon on Monday (30th March).

He registered his first assist from an inswinging corner, allowing Levi García to level early in the second half, before providing his second from a free-kick, which García finished first time to complete both his brace and Cardines’ assist double.

The draw saw Trinidad and Tobago take Gabon to a penalty shootout, where their opponents edged a 3–2 victory to bring the tournament to a close.

Cardines stepped up during the shootout, showing confidence and character, but was narrowly off target from 12 yards.

The 19-year-old now has three assists in 11 senior international appearances, continuing his positive impact at senior level following his return to the international set-up after injury ruled him out of November’s World Cup qualifiers.

Having made his senior debut in May 2025, Cardines is building valuable experience across both World Cup qualifying and wider international competition, further establishing himself within the national side.

The FIFA Series initiative, which brings together nations from different confederations, saw Trinidad and Tobago face Venezuela, Gabon and hosts Uzbekistan in a competitive and diverse group of fixtures.

**Dean Benamar** was on target as England Under-18s secured a 2–0 victory over Croatia on Tuesday afternoon (31st March), confirming the Young Lions’ progression to the next stage of qualification for the 2027 UEFA European Under-19 Championship.

It marked England’s final fixture of the March international window, with the side recording two wins (against Bulgaria and Croatia) and one defeat (to Spain) across the three matches.

Returning to international action after injury curtailed his involvement towards the end of last year, Benamar made a decisive impact with a well-taken goal, having been an unused substitute in the earlier fixtures against Bulgaria and Spain.

**Benji Casey** was also involved throughout the camp, making late substitute appearances in both victories over Bulgaria and Croatia, introduced in the 75th minute on each occasion to help see out the results.

The striker was named among the substitutes in the defeat to Spain but remained unused, continuing his steady development at international level through consistent involvement in matchday squads.

England’s results ensure they remain in League A for the next stage of qualification on the road to the 2027 finals in the Czech Republic.

Under the revised format, qualification is split across three rounds, with this stage forming Round One. League standings will determine placement for Round Two in the autumn, before a final round next spring decides the seven teams to join the hosts.

These fixtures mark another important step for the group, who will progress into the MU19s during the 2026/27 season as they continue their journey towards the European Championship finals.

**Lucca Benetton** was an unused substitute as England Under-17s opened their UEFA European Under-17 Championship qualifying campaign with a 3–0 victory over the Faroe Islands, before not being included in the matchday squad for the 3–1 defeat to Israel.

The 15-year-old 'keeper was again absent from the squad for England’s final fixture – a 2–0 win over Estonia – as the Young Lions concluded their League B group with two wins and one defeat.

Despite finishing the campaign on a positive note, England were unable to qualify for this summer’s UEFA U17 EURO Finals, with progression already ruled out following results in the opening round last November.

Still just 15, Benetton’s involvement at Under-17 level underlines his rapid progression through the England pathway, having stepped up an age group after featuring for the Under-16s earlier this season.

At club level, he has also established himself as Palace Under-18s’ first-choice 'keeper in recent months, with his performances continuing to support his international recognition.

U21s wing-back **Joel Drakes-Thomas** was also named in the original squad but withdrew prior to the camp and was replaced by Harvey Higgins.

Palace U21s ‘keeper **Owen Goodman** was an unused substitute as Canada played out a weather-disrupted 0–0 draw with Tunisia in their latest international friendly.

The match in Toronto was delayed by over 90 minutes due to thunder, lightning and torrential rain, with conditions remaining challenging once play eventually got underway on a rain-soaked surface.

Despite creating several opportunities, Canada were unable to find a breakthrough against the North African side, as they concluded their March international camp with a goalless draw.

It marks a second consecutive game as an unused substitute for Goodman during the current international window, as the 22-year-old continues to gain valuable experience within the senior national team set-up.

The camp also brought clarity on Canada’s FIFA World Cup 2026 opponents, with Bosnia and Herzegovina securing the final place in Group B following a dramatic play-off victory over Italy.

Canada will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in their opening match of the tournament in Toronto on 12th June, as the co-hosts begin their World Cup campaign on home soil.

Goodman, currently gaining senior experience out on loan this season, will be hoping his continued involvement in international camps can strengthen his chances of being included in Canada’s squad for the tournament next summer.

Palace U18s centre-back **Charlie Walker-Smith** featured off the bench for Wales Under-19s in their international friendly against the USA in Spain on Saturday.

Introduced in the second half, the defender played 30 minutes as Cymru were beaten 4–0 at Oliva Nova Resort, in a fixture that forms part of their preparations for this summer’s UEFA U19 EURO Finals, set to be hosted in north Wales.

Walker-Smith’s involvement comes amid a period of transition within the squad, with the March camp offering opportunities for new players to integrate and for staff to assess options ahead of the final stages of preparation.

Speaking earlier in the week, he said: “I think there were a few new boys being tested and some new coaching staff as well, so it was about getting to grips with everything.”

The appearance adds to Walker-Smith’s growing experience with the Young Dragons across recent international windows, having also featured in September’s preparatory tournament, October’s Marbella camp, and a November mini-tournament.

#### **Disabled supporters**

Supporters who are registered disabled with the club will receive a free Personal Assistant ticket. 

Disabled supporters, and supporters who would like to sit during the game, will need to call the Box Office to purchase appropriate seats.

**Please note that Personal Assistant tickets are only valid when the disabled supporter also attends.** Any Personal Assistant attending without accompanying a disabled supporter will automatically be banned from purchasing future away tickets for the remainder of the season.

#### **Private chartered flight**

We were pleased to confirm last week that, to ensure supporters have a convenient way of attending the game in Florence, a number of packages are available for a private chartered flight trip.

#### **Home leg tickets**

The home leg of the tie will be played at Selhurst Park the preceding Thursday (9th April, 20:00 BST), with **tickets now sold out**.

A small number of tickets may be released at 13:00 BST on Friday, 3rd April, once current requests have been processed. Additional tickets may also be released or returned by supporters ahead of the match. The young Eagles will take on the young Reds on **Friday, 17th April** under the lights at **Old Trafford**, with kick-off scheduled for **19:00 BST**.

Palace reached the semi-finals following a dramatic 3–2 comeback victory over five-time winners and reigning champions Aston Villa under the lights at Villa Park.

Darren Fletcher’s side have progressed with wins over Peterborough United (1-0), Derby County (2-1) and Oxford United (4-1), and arrive in strong form having won 12 consecutive matches in 2026.

United are also the most successful club in Youth Cup history, having lifted the trophy an impressive 11 times.

For Palace, this marks their first Youth Cup semi-final appearance since 1997, when a side featuring Clinton Morrison, Wayne Carlisle and Hayden Mullins defeated Blackburn Rovers 4–3 on aggregate to reach the final.

If the final is level after 90 minutes, the winner will be decided by extra time and, if necessary, penalties. Should Palace progress, we will face the winners of Manchester City vs Blackburn Rovers away in the final, which must be played before Saturday, 9th May.

It was a sight to behold.

As the first-half ticked into the seventh minute of stoppage time, with Wharton having already set up Jørgen Strand Larsen moments earlier, the midfielder produced the kind of assist few players in world football can.

The England international collected Jaydee Canvot's low ball into feet, swivelled to set himself and – in a moment of instinctive genius – lofted an inch-perfect pass over the Spurs defence for Ismaïla Sarr to race onto and prod beyond the goalkeeper.

The assist was imaginative, audacious and delightful – and teed up a 3-1 lead which secured Palace back-to-back away wins at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the first time.

Following a supporter vote, combined with a panel of experts' choices, Wharton has become the third winner of the Premier League's new Creative Moment of the Month accolade, after Bruno Guimaraes' trivela assist for Newcastle in January and Dominic Solanke's scorpion kick goal for Tottenham in February.

“It was literally just touch and pass," Wharton later said about the assist. "I didn't really… I don't know!

"When you're playing, yeah, you're thinking about what to do, but you just do it. You don't really have time to think too much. 

"I always say if there's a forward pass, then I'll try and make it, because this is what helps the team score goals, create chances and get in good positions.

“I don't really overthink it. If I take a touch and someone's running in behind, I'll try and play them in so we can score goals.”

Wharton saw off competition from creative moments by Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes; Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White; Arsenal's Riccardo Calafiori; and Brentford's Keane Lewis-Potter to win March's prize.

His brace of assists at Spurs also saw him become the first Palace player to assist twice in the first-half of a Premier League game since Michael Olise against Sheffield United in January 2024 – and, away from home, since Olise at Bournemouth in December 2022.
