Having waited since 1992 to register a Premier League victory over Manchester United, Palace will be hoping to end their lengthy wait for a league success over the Red Devils in this meeting.
With their hopes of adding to their record haul of 20 league titles all-but over by Christmas as their neighbours City cruise towards the trophy, Jose Mourinho’s attentions have turned to ensuring that the world’s richest club remain in the UEFA Champions League next season, while trying to add some further silverware to the brimming cabinets at Old Trafford.
Last month saw progress made in the FA Cup as Huddersfield Town were dispatched in round five, leading to a quarter-final clash with Brighton and Hove Albion, while their last-16 clash against Sevilla is tantalisingly poised at 0-0 after the first leg in Spain.
Palace are looking to put an end to a run of five matches without a win but will be looking forward to playing on a Monday night as their last top flight game on this day of the week saw a victory against Arsenal last season.
United Look To Build On Blues Victory
The Reds come into this contest in south London on the back of three points against Chelsea last weekend, after going behind it was man of the match Romelu Lukaku who put the home side on level terms before he provided the assist for substitute Jesse Lingard to head home the winner. The three points meant United returned to second place and now have a six point lead over the Blues.
Tonight they are on the road for the fourth time in five games and Mourinho will be hoping to build on last week's three points as they continue to stay in the next best place behind the league leaders.
View From The Opposition
Jose Mourinho comments on the battle for places in the top four.
“If you ask me second or fourth, I say by the financial point of view it doesn’t make a difference, by the prestige point of view, it doesn’t make a difference. You go to Champions League and the fourth doesn’t even now need to play the last qualification match.
“But by the personal point of view, second is better than third, third is better than fourth, so we are going to try the best possible. Of course, the top four is very difficult and that’s the main target for us.”
Team News
Roy Hodgson has had a boost on the injury front this week with defenders Martin Kelly and Jeffrey Schlupp both back in training and fit for a return in this match.
The Palace boss though had to report that they were the only two from a long injury list available to be ready for action.
The Eagles also signed goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri on Friday but on-loan Timothy Fosu-Mensah is ineligible against his parent club.
United also have injury concerns of their own with six first-team players out including Ander Herrera missing out with a muscle injury whilst defenders Daley Blind, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo are also all ruled out.
Matchday Officials
Neil Swarbrick has taken charge of two matches for both these sides this season as we come to the beginning of March.
He took charge of Palace’s away games at Manchester City and across London against West Ham United whilst he was the man in the middle for United’s home match with Brighton and their trip to Stoke City in September.
This season Neil has shown 54 yellow cards in the 20 games he has officiated.
Referee: Neil Swarbrick
