Despite the victory against the Blues failing to lift the Eagles off the foot of the table, they will be eyeing another three points to cut the gap between themselves and Stoke City, who sit just outside the relegation zone with a five-point cushion.
However, Palace haven't enjoyed a good record against the Magpies in recent years, having beaten them just twice in their last 14 meetings. Their last victory at St James' Park came back in March 1998 - one of only two wins at the venue.
Toon enjoying top-flight return
Newcastle come into this game having lost just once in their last five matches, recovering from a slow start to climb into the top half of the table, with 11 points gained from their opening eight matches.
Despite minimal investment in the transfer window, the majority of the squad that lifted the Championship last term have continued to make St James' Park a difficult place to visit, with only Tottenham Hotspur in the opening game beating the black and whites on their own patch.
The goals are being shared around the team too, and with Isaac Hayden and Ayoze Perez netting in the 2-2 draw at Southampton last Sunday, it means that eight different players have got on the scoresheet already this term for Rafael Benitez's men.
View from the opposition
Rafael Benitez's quotes from Friday's pre-match press conference ahead of the match this weekend:
"Crystal Palace create chances & have been unlucky with results. It will be a difficult game - we have to try & put pressure on them.
"We have a good team with young players and can improve. We are close to the top but also the bottom".
Team news
Former Eagle Dwight Gayle misses out on a reunion with his former side after he picked up a calf injury late in Magpies' game at Southampton last week, while Massaido Haidara and Paul Dummet are out.
Having missed out on the Chelsea victory after sustaining a calf injury on international duty, Wayne Hennessey is fit again and could return in goal, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek is available after being unable to play last week against his parent club.
Hodgson has confirmed that Christian Benteke is on track to return not long after the next international break, meaning that he and Connor Wickham remain out of contention.
Matchday officials
Stuart Attwell oversees just his fourth Premier League game of the season on Saturday, but he has already officiated at St James' Park this term as Newcastle ran out 2-1 winners against Stoke City in September.
He has taken charge of just one top-flight game involving the Eagles, but that was their 5-1 thrashing of the Magpies in November 2015.
