After going in at the break trailing to a Mohamed Diame goal the manager’s half time instructions gave Palace the upper hand against the Magpies.
“The first half was quite tight but the second half we put the pressure on them, our attacking players were outstanding but unfortunately we just couldn’t get that second goal.
“The gaffer changed the formation and demanded more urgency to start putting them under more pressure.”
The penalty being converted by Luka Milivojevic means Palace have lost only three of their last 17 league matches and McArthur will take the point and believes the squad have enough to win their battle to stay clear of the relegation zone.
“We are obviously near the bottom and three points go a long way but when you come back from 1-0 down at half time then you take it sometimes.
“There is plenty of believe in our changing room, you look at our play today and there is no sign of anyone going into their shell and we are all confident.”
