Townsend's spectacular finish on just six minutes saw the winger take the ball from inside his own half before giving Boaz Myhill, in the West Brom goal, no chance from 30 yards out before he added a second late in the game as he created his own bit of career history.
“It was good to get on the scoresheet, it’s been a long time coming and It’s nice to get a couple of goals tonight which is the first brace of my career and I will be looking to get a few more in the Premier League over the coming weeks.”
When asked to recall that opening goal of the night he says it’s a shooting position which is not new to him but he was pleased to see an end result to give the away support some early cheer on the night.
“I am sure my team mates will tell you it’s a position that I shoot from all too frequently but don’t get the same results so it’s nice to catch one perfectly.
“It’s similar to the chance I had against Liverpool where I have come inside and hit the bar but thankfully it dipped a bit more and I will take that, hopefully it will give me a bit more confidence when shooting in the future and maybe put a few more away like that.
"At that stage of the game it was perfect as the early goal settled us down."
Once again the side created a number of chances and the Eagles winger was pleased to be able to see the chances taken after the disappointment last Saturday.
“We had three goals but again we could have had seven or eight but we will take the three and build on that and hopefully will have the confidence going into Monday’s game to put away the chances we didn’t against Newcastle.
“The good thing for us is that we can make eight changes to the team but we have that strength in depth to still put out a strong side so it bodes well for the future.”
Townsend has good memories of playing in this competition at Tottenham and believes that this season could be an opportunity for the Eagles to make their mark as they await Saturday’s fourth round draw.
“I have always enjoyed this competition, in the first few rounds you have to make changes but in this one we were lucky in that we don’t play until Monday so we were able to play a few more starting eleven players as well as the lads that need games. It’s good for us because you win one more game and before you know it you are in the deeper rounds and anything can happen.
“It’s a competition that I have been to the final before in so I know how good it can be and hopefully we can go on a little run.”
