On This Day - 2004

29 May 2015

11 years ago today Crystal Palace were promoted to the Premier League after beating West Ham United in the Division One play-off final.

Neil Shipperley grabbed the only goal of the game at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium and as captain he got his hands first on the trophy that sealed the Eagles' return to the top flight after a six year absence.

The striker scored from close range after 61 minutes after West Ham goalkeeper Stephen Bywater failed to hold Andy Johnson's shot but keeper Nico Vaesen kept the Hammers at bay with fine saves from Bobby Zamora and Steve Lomas.

The Palace team that day: Vaesen, Butterfield (Powell 69), Popovic, Leigertwood, Granville, Routledge, Riihilahti, Derry, Hughes, Shipperley, Johnson. Subs Not Used: Freedman, Berthelin, Black, Watson.
