International Cup Highlights: Crystal Palace 2-2 Real Sociedad

Just over two weeks on from their [1-1 draw away at Leeds United](https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/match-reports/leeds-united-crystal-palace-premier-league-2-2425/), Crystal Palace Under-21s began their defence of the Premier League International Cup by welcoming Real Sociedad to the VBS Community Stadium.

Head coach Darren Powell made four changes to the side which drew with Leeds, with Seán Grehan, David Obou, Luke Browne and Adler Nascimento returning for Jake Grante, Joe Sheridan, Franco Umeh and Asher Agbinone.

Obou and Grehan were making their first starts of the season, while Umeh and Agbinone featured in the first-team matchday squad against QPR in the Carabao Cup.

Despite the backing of a decent crowd at Sutton United’s ground, the Eagles were on the backfoot early on after conceding within the opening 30 seconds. 

Forward Sydney Osazuwa picked up a loose ball, raced into the box and managed to finish to put the visitors in front. 

Palace looked to hit back immediately and nearly did so through Zach Marsh. Obou and Adler Nascimento worked it well to the number 9, but he dragged his effort just wide of the mark.

The Basque outfit looked to double their lead as the half went on. Palace ‘keeper Louie Moulden was forced into a fingertip save a quarter of an hour in to deny a long-range effort, while Browne slid in well to deny Osazuwa a second.

Towards the end of the half, Palace started to grow into the game and create more chances. Hindolo Mustapha, who [scored his first ever senior international goal for Sierra Leone](https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/announcement/hindolo-mustapha-sierra-leone-senior-squad-call-up/) during the international break, saw an effort turned behind.

On the stroke of half-time, Palace managed to draw level. Excellent hold-up play from Browne and substitute Jemiah Umolu saw the ball worked out wide to Nascimento. The No. 7 skipped past three Sociedad challenges and tucked the ball home from inside the box.

Palace almost went into the break ahead, though Mustapha’s shot was saved and the follow-up from Umolu was cleared off the line by the recovering Sociedad defenders.

The visitors started the second-half brightly, enjoying more of the ball and creating a number of chances, but Moulden and the Palace defence dealt with their early pressure.

The Eagles were in search of a go-ahead goal and duly found it on the hour-mark. Excellent work down the right hand side from Caleb Kporha saw him find a cross into an unmarked Umolu inside the box, who finished at the first time of asking.

Palace’s lead lasted less than 10 minutes, as the Spanish side drew level with 20 minutes to play. Unax Agote found himself on the scoresheet, finishing after the ball wasn’t properly cleared away from a Sociedad attack.

Chances came and went for both sides as the game went on, with captain Justin Devenny seeing an effort on the edge of the box saved and Moulden standing tall to deny a late Sociedad flurry.

The result means that Palace begin their defence of their trophy with a point. They sit in second place of Group D - two points behind RB Leipzig.

After comfortably overcoming Championship opposition in the form of Norwich City in the second round, Palace were looking to repeat the trick in the third – this time away from home – against Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road.

Manager Oliver Glasner once again opted to make just a handful of changes, with Chris Richards returning to the starting XI at centre-back and Jefferson Lerma and Daichi Kamada both coming into the team in central midfield.

As they did against Norwich, Palace enjoyed a great deal of control in the early stages – both in possession and territorially.

Indeed, it was from their high press that Palace’s first chance arrived after 10 minutes – and it was one which Ebere Eze, on his return to Loftus Road after four years as a player there, perhaps ought to have capitalised upon, running onto a square ball from Nketiah but side-footing high over the bar after the ball bobbled in front of him.

That South London connection between Palace’s two No. 10s – childhood friends Eze and Nketiah – was a frequent feature of the first-half, and eventually led to the opening goal.

When Marc Guéhi won a free-kick 40 yards from goal, it looked for all the world like Eze would deliver it – but the playmaker had other ideas, slipping the ball into space for Nketiah to sprint into and smash a low finish across goal and into the net, his first goal in a Palace shirt.

Palace had started at a pace which QPR were struggling to live with, and carved out another shooting opportunity moments later when Eze clipped a cross towards the far post and Daniel Muñoz – sneaking in around at the back post, but unsighted as a result – side-footed wide of the goal.

Glasner’s side managed the remainder of the first-half with a degree of comfort in possession and territory – the only moment of danger being a whipped cross which Richards was alive to, deflecting Zan Celar’s header behind.

The closest we came to another goal was for Palace on the stroke of half-time: another clever pass from Eze, another smart touch from Nketiah, and another drilled finish across goal, this one somehow failing to cross the line as the ball got caught between Muñoz and a covering defender.

Such was the extent of Palace’s general dominance in possession that a QPR equaliser seemed extremely unlikely – but they found one early in the second-half at the culmination of their first real attack of the game.

Palace appeared to have gotten away with it thanks to goalkeeper Dean Henderson’s superb save from Paul Smyth’s close-range header at the far post – but seconds later, they failed to clear the subsequent corner, and the ball fell kindly for Sam Field to swivel and smash in a half-volley to get Loftus Road rocking.

It was easily the hosts’ best spell of the game and Palace were forced to momentarily dig in, although Maxence Lacroix did see his near-post header flash wide of the far post – the sheer pace on Eze’s cross marking it out as no more than a half-chance.

But ride it out Palace did – and once they began to establish themselves once more, a counter-attack led to them taking the lead once again.

It was Eze on his return to Loftus Road who made the difference, Kamada’s quick pass and a neat turn in midfield making space for a low drive from 25 yards – but the effort owed much to a significant deflection off QPR defender Steve Cook to leave ‘keeper QPR Joe Walsh flat-footed.

That allowed Palace to exert themselves on the contest once again, settling – save for a couple of nervy moments, and a handful of QPR corners – the tempo down.

Ismaïla Sarr – seeking his second goal of the competition this season, after being awarded his first by the referee post-match against Norwich – was a lively presence and forced Walsh into a flying save with a late effort from the edge of the box.

The clock was just ticking into five additional minutes when QPR’s big moment arrived – and, thankfully, left. Walsh’s long kick forwards beat the back line and substitute Alfie Lloyd took the bouncing ball in his stride, unleashing a dipping volley towards the bottom corner – just wide.

A hard-fought win, but an important one for Palace, who duly progressed into the Carabao Cup fourth round for the first time since 2018/19.

On this day (17th September), 40 years ago, a fresh-faced young man called Terry ‘Tel’ Byfield started his job as receptionist at Crystal Palace through the Youth Training Scheme.

Four decades – and a plethora of varied roles – later, Terry continues to serve the club with wisdom, vigour, decency and – as anybody who knows him well enough will tell you – no shortage of dry wit.

“I suppose looking back over that length of time, both on and off the pitch, there's been a lot of highs, lows, stories, whatever… I would say it's gone by quickly,” he smiles. “But I think that’s because no two days are the same at a football club.

“You don't see it as a day-to-day job, but you have to take yourself out of the fan element. You can't get wrapped up in whether it's a transfer or something happening at the stadium – it's being done for the good of the business.

“But as a working life, it's been an absolute pleasure to have the opportunity to do it for so long. I'm certainly proud to be coming up to a landmark point in my career, and it's not until you reach that point, and people start congratulating you on it, that you realise a) how long it is and b) what has actually been involved!

“You know, whether it's ranging from the first home game under Steve Coppell, or Ian Wright coming on as a substitute to win us a game against Oldham, or being at Wembley for the FA Cup final, or being in the Premier League for 12 years… It's incredible, really, to be at your football club for 40 years.

“South London and Proud!… Sorry if that was too long!” 

As a media man for much of his Palace career, it’s fitting his instinct is to consider the length of his own answer. But that’s skipping ahead. Back, then, to how it all began.

Byfield in his current role of Production Manager at Palace

Hailing from a South London-based family of some-Millwall, but mostly-Palace (he assures us), supporters, Terry Byfield first truly began backing the Eagles in the 1970s.

Among the Palace side of the family was his Dad, who duly brought Terry the schoolboy to Football Combination – “what we now know as Under-21s” – and Under-18s matches. Terry fondly recalls watching, in the late 70s, the Youth Cup-winning teams of Vince Hilaire and Peter Nicholas as one of 200 or 300 fans present.

He and his friends eventually became Season Ticket Holders in the Holmesdale Stand, recalling: “I used to turn up at the ground and all the TV trucks – not as many as now – used to be in the Sainsbury’s car park, so I used to go there first.

“If there were two or three trucks, that would mean that it was the highlights game on The Big Match on ITV on Sunday afternoon!

“They used to show three games, and we would be one of the main games if those trucks were there. It’s obviously a world away from what it is now, but it was quite a big thing in those days when Palace v Grimsby was on the highlights!”

Terry left college with three O-Levels unsure of his next steps, but had “sort of having an inkling I wanted to do some kind of journalism.”

Prospective applications to local publications went nowhere, so Terry did the next most logical thing: in 1984, he wrote directly to Crystal Palace Chairman, Ron Noades, asking for work.

“I don’t think I even said in what department!” Terry laughs. “I just said ‘are there any roles available?’

“I got a reply back a few days later: Ron said there weren’t any definite roles, but to please ring our secretary to book an appointment. I rang his secretary, Paula, I came in, saw Ron, had a chat with him in his office for about an hour or so, and left.

“Not long after, I got a letter to say they were going to take me on in the administration side of the club, on £26.25 a week on the YTS \[Youth Training Scheme\].”

It’s strange to think 40 years on, but Terry’s Palace career may actually have only lasted a matter of months.

Because his salary was structured in line with the players on the YTS scheme, there came a point where Noades, deciding he could no longer maintain this for administration staff, almost brought his time at the club to a premature end.

“He said, ‘we might have to let you go, because the YTS has got to finish.’ 

“But then, just the following week, he said to me: ‘actually, we’re going to increase your money, and keep you on!’” Never in doubt.

After a few weeks’ working in the commercial department of the club, Terry moved into a role on reception: “A tremendous role where you know everything that was going on, because you’re answering the phone and letting people in at the door every day.

“I was here when Ian Wright first turned up to meet Steve Coppell – and I didn’t have a clue who he was! I went to Steve, ‘Ian Wright is here to see you’ - and a few weeks later he was playing for us!

“It’s hard to get across, but it was a completely different set-up – a different world.”

As Terry progressed, so too did his duties with the club. After a lengthy stint on reception, he became Assistant Club Secretary under Mike Hurst, and also became involved in the club’s box office.

Ever-versatile, it was in the role of Assistant Club Secretary where Terry made his most noticeable impact to supporters, setting up a publications department alongside Pete King. There, the duo soon became well known for running the match programme, Palace News, and ClubCall.

The latter was a club-by-club telephone information service of immense popularity in the 1980s, with fans calling a telephone line to listen to audio recordings of interviews and club updates, run by BT and charged at between 25p and 38p a minute.

“It was a rip-off!” Terry laughs. “But for us, Pete and I used to go down to the training ground on a Monday and get four interviews.

"On Thursday we’d get Coppell, and that would come out on a Friday – nobody had really had that here before, the day before a game, listening to the manager talking about it.

“We introduced a brilliant thing for three or four weeks where Steve would come in on a Sunday morning, and we set it up so people could leave a voice note. We took 10 questions and put them to Steve, and he’d answer them – a day-after review of the game.

"People could ring ClubCall and listen to that on a Sunday.”

After this latest successful stint, Terry became Communications Manager at Selhurst Park around the time Sky Sports began to grow, helping a myriad of managers and players through ever-burgeoning demands for press conferences and interview requests.

It was Terry’s longest role at Palace – he later became Content Editor, before adopting his current title of Production Manager – but, title aside, it was simply working for the club from which he drew the most pleasure, the most pride.

“It’s as though you’re not going to work every day,” he explains. “Obviously, you’re here to do a job, but all along, whatever task you’re given, you’re not looking at it as if you’re at work.

“You just end up soaking up the fact that you’re doing it for a club that you’ve supported since you were a boy, and that your family supported before that.

“You can be going up to Newcastle in the Premiership in 1995, knowing you’ve got to win to stay up, and all the week before you think it's going to happen… and then on the day, you get relegated. 

“The club has to change, you move back into the First Division, and that episode's gone – so you move on to another one.

“The fact is that, even so, every season's different, isn't it? Every owner's different, every manager's different… and obviously because I've done various roles, my job hasn't stayed the same either.”

We put another point to Terry: if he were a player, he would have enjoyed four testimonials by now – so who from his time at the club would’ve made his all-star Palace XI?

“I’d better be careful, because I’m going to miss people out,” Terry reminds us, cautiously. “It all took off with Wright and \[Mark\] Bright, Geoff Thomas coming down from Crewe… and you’d have Gareth Southgate as your captain.

“The promotion team of ’79 – I was one of the 51,482 that were here at Selhurst \[in the deciding game against Burnley\], a ridiculous crowd considering what we were getting then, and it was just an amazing night because of that amazing side.

“The ‘Team of the 80s’… I watched them as a fan, so to then start working at the club, and get to know them as people, ringing them to do programme interviews…  incredible, really.

“Ian Evans, Jim Cannon, Dave Swindlehurst… and then lots of people from Iain Dowie’s squad and Neil Warnock’s \[both in the 2000s\]… there are so many names to choose from over the years.

“It’s quite interesting that a lot of former Palace players have gone on to do really great work in the media – so I’ve then met them again when they’ve come back to Selhurst for that! And I’ve worked with close to 30 managers, I would think.

“It’s when you look back you realise who you’ve worked with – and that they were all great. For someone in my job, at any club doing Communications, you want a manager who ‘gets it’ – and I’ve been fortunate to work with a number of those here over the years.”

We put Terry on the spot again, then: of his 14,610 days at Crystal Palace, which were his happiest?  “Any of the finals,” he replies, without hesitation.

“The Iain Dowie final at Cardiff \[a 1-0 win over West Ham in the First Division play-off final in 2004\], the play-off final when we beat Sheffield United with the last kick of the game \[in 1997\], the promotion in 1989…

“We lost up at Blackburn in the first leg, 3-1 down. I was working in the box office the morning after, and we were putting play-off tickets on sale for the second leg.

“The club secretary came down from his office, and put a sign up on the door: ‘Saturday 1st June, 1989: Palace 3, Blackburn 0 – Be there.’ – and that’s obviously how it panned out! That was an amazing, sunny day, the celebrations afterwards…

“Probably if I had to pick one day, it’d be the 4-3 \[win over Liverpool in the 1990 FA Cup semi-final at Villa Park\]. We were 1-0 down but when we equalised, it all just took off from there.”

As a fan and an employee, you couldn't want for anything else

We choose not to dwell on the lows – Terry naturally cites the club’s two administrations, in which he saw many colleagues lose their livelihoods, as the most difficult days – but instead look to the future.

“Where the club are now,” he considers, “is just on another level to those days of everyday problems at the training ground, struggling to pay bills and run the club. 

“It’s a different world. As a fan and an employee, you couldn’t want for anything else, you know.

“We used to be known as a ‘yo-yo club’, but since getting promotion against Watford, with the takeover in 2010 and the new shareholders that have come in since, it’s grown to a position where the season’s starting and everyone’s thinking ‘can we raise it to another level?’ – whereas previously, it’s been ‘let’s finish fourth from bottom and stay up’!

“We’ve sold out season tickets again this year. I can remember matches back in the 1980s against Shrewsbury Town on a Sunday afternoon where we had about 4,500! It’s another world.

“Since I’ve been here, we’ve had training grounds at Mitcham and over at Beckenham – but to have the training ground that we’ve got now for the first-team and, across the road, the state-of-the-art facility that is the Academy, which hosts Palace Women as well… it’s incredible to look back, over 40 years, at how the club has grown.

“I’m sure, in this next chapter, the stadium will look tremendous. Whether we reach the next level on the pitch, certainly we’re very close to reaching the next level off it."

Just as 40 years’ time dilated so much for Terry, so too does our interview zip by in an instant, Terry and this writer both realising we should probably get going – but not before we ask if there’s anyone he’d like us to thank.

He pauses. Among many close colleagues and friends he’d like us to, Terry duly pays tribute to the late Ron Noades for taking him on back in 1984; Ron’s wife, Novello, and their family; the managers he has worked with, including Steve Coppell, Iain Dowie and Alan Smith; and Noades’ secretary, Paula Morley, who “taught him all his knowledge and skills of working in football administration.”

He leaves the room with a thought: “In this job, you know that each day is going to be different here, but you’re working in an environment that you're familiar with, and you know the people, you know how the business works.

“I think you've got to look at it and say that I'm very lucky to have had this opportunity in my working life, to work somewhere that I'm very proud to be associated with.

“Because I’ve done various roles, there’s never been any fear of it getting boring or thinking ‘how long is this going to go on for?’ It’s gone very quickly, and the reason it's gone quickly has been because it's been exciting.

“Many Palace fans will say that to follow the club is a rollercoaster ride – and I'd say it's exactly the same behind the scenes.

"... what a line that is for you, eh!"

40 years. Some achievement. If a Football Club is a community – a cumulative sum of its people, their goals and their work – then Terry Byfield is, has been, and continues to be, a massive part of Crystal Palace.

### **The draw**

Due to the new format of UEFA club competitions this season, Carabao Cup third-round ties are split across two weeks this season, so the draw will not be made until next week.

It will take place live on Sky Sports following the conclusion of the televised third-round tie between Liverpool and West Ham United on **Wednesday (25th September)** evening.

With that match set to kick off at 20:00 BST, should penalties be avoided, it is likely the draw will begin at around **22:15**.

Draw numbers will be confirmed the morning of the draw.

### **The fixtures**

Fourth-round matches are due to be played in the week commencing **Monday 28th October.**

Once again, any matches which end in a draw at this stage will go straight to penalties; extra-time is only used in the Carabao Cup from the semi-finals onwards.

### **The teams**

Six other sides are already into the fourth round of the draw: Brentford, Manchester United, Preston, Sheffield Wednesday, Southampton and Stoke advanced alongside Palace on Tuesday evening.

A further nine sides will join them over the next week: Brighton, Wolves, Coventry and Tottenham are all in action on Wednesday night, and the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Newcastle United and West Ham United, among others, will be looking to progress next week.

Glasner reflects on QPR win

The Eagles came out on top in Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup third-round tie amidst a boisterous crowd at Loftus Road, with goals from Eddie Nketiah – his first for the club – and Ebere Eze sealing progression to the fourth round.

Glasner told Palace TV: “It was a tough game, but we expected a tough game here against a good Championship team in their stadium.

“It was very tight and then I think we controlled the game, took the lead, fully deserved. Then, they came back with a set play and the crowd got loud, and I think we had a great reaction. We scored immediately our second goal and, with also great support from our fans here behind the goal, over 90 minutes I think it's deserved – but it was a tough game.

“I think we have to accept that not every game is brilliant, when you play every third day and with a very, very big comeback against Leicester. With a lot of effort and then playing three days later here, and them getting the equaliser after a corner ,and then coming back... again, we're on the right pathway. It's not everything perfect.

“Sometimes you have to work for the win. We worked today for the win, and so we are pleased that we're in the next round.”

Glasner spoke about how QPR’s strengths factored into his team selection in West London, and how he was pleased his side rose to meet that challenge.

The manager explained: “This was also, in the starting XI, one of the reasons why we played with a tall back three. [Nathaniel] Clyney got a break, and also with Jeff Lerma in midfield. We know that they are good in set plays.

“We knew that they can play long balls, and we defended it really well. This is part of football. Football is not just passing and scoring. Football is also hard work, it's running and it's defending with a lot of passion and this is what we did, so again, we are really pleased to be in last 16.”

The manager was also pleased to see Nketiah get off the mark in red and blue, adding: “Eddie showed it against Leicester [on Saturday]: he had very good finishes, was a little bit unlucky. Today, he scored.

“He had a great chance as well in the first-half where I think one defender cleared it on the line. He showed what he also showed in training. He got a little bit tired, which is normal because he played the first 90 minutes for a long time three days before.

“But we wanted to have the same attacking three, with Eze, [JP] Mateta and Nketiah, to get each other known, because this week we can't train. It's just recovery, and then we have to use the game time, the minutes to get each other known. 

“JP scored two against Leicester. Eddie scored the first one [tonight]. Ebs scored the second today, so all offensive players scored goals, and this is important for their confidence.”

Eze talks cup win at QPR

The England international, who broke through into senior football with the Hoops before his move to the Eagles, struck midway through the second-half with a deflected effort to quell a fervent Loftus Road, who had witnessed their side cancel out Eddie Nketiah’s early opener.

“That was the main thing as to what we wanted to come here and do today: win, go through to the next round, and put in a performance,” Eze told Palace TV. 

“It's a difficult place to come. You can see the atmosphere, it's not easy to play under, but we did what we needed to do, and that's the most important thing.

“That’s what we were saying there [in the changing room]: sometimes games are tough, and you're under it a bit and they're applying pressure, but to come out on the other side with the victory, that's a testament to the character of the boys.”

Eze said of Nketiah, whom he assisted for the first goal: “He’s a top player, I know that. 

“If you put him in the right places he's going to finish, and today he's got the first one [for Palace]. I'm sure many will come after this. 

On his own goal, he added: “To be fair I wasn't sure if it was going wide or not, but yeah, I'll take the goal man! 

“Of course, to come back here and to score is a great feeling, and I enjoyed today which is important as well.

“It’s always a good feeling [to return to Loftus Road]. I came back for a pre-season game [with Palace two years ago] and that was cool as well, but to come back in a competitive one, to see the energy and the atmosphere here, that was a sick feeling. I enjoyed it.

“I’m happy to win, happy to score, and just to show a bit of love to the fans as well, which is a good thing to do.”


Ebere Eze was delighted to be the goalscorer who secured Crystal Palace’s safe passage in the Carabao Cup third round against Queens Park Rangers.

Eze first showed some quick-thinking at a free-kick to tee up Eddie Nketiah's first goal in a Crystal Palace shirt, before striking from range – via a deflection – to secure a winning return to Loftus Road in the Carabao Cup third round.

Oliver Glasner's side were largely in control in the first-half, but needed to show their own gritty side to see out victory in the second 45.

They duly demonstrated the character required to overcome a spirited QPR team, with Eze at the heart of their display.

Stay on top of all the action with our extensive in-app **Match Centre:** now available for **all four professional Crystal Palace teams** (Men, Women, U21s and U18s!).

Follow all the build-up to kick-off with pre-match news and video all in one place, including reaction, press conferences and all the important team news.

Throughout the match, live Opta stats will keep you up to date with all the action, as well as live text commentary to ensure you don’t miss a minute. Goal updates will keep you informed of all the goals for both sides.

**To turn on live match updates for each team, simply:**

1. Login to the Palace App and tap your initials in the top-right to open your 'Profile' screen
2. Tap 'App Settings'
3. Tap 'Notification Preferences'
4. Use this screen to toggle which teams you would like to see in-game notifications for – and for which events too!

After the game, the Match Centre is the place to be for all the reaction, as the Palace TV cameras catch up with the manager and players for their thoughts on the game.

Stay tuned for the Man of the Match votes, where you can pick out your standout performers from the 90-minutes, as well as match highlights.

#### **Revamped Palace TV**

The revamped Palace TV section means you can catch up on all the highlights and key clips as soon as they are available, as well as all the exclusive interviews and features from Copers Cope Road.

Each video is now hosted in an improved video player with better rewind and fast-forward functionality, **and can be connected to Chromecast devices by tapping the 'cast' icon in the top-right corner.**

Also through the app, Palace TV+ subscribers can listen to live radio commentaries of all first-team fixtures throughout the season, as watch live broadcasts of selected Academy fixtures – plus, full 90-minute match replays of all Premier League fixtures on demand - **all** **now** **able to be cast to your Chromecast devices.**
