Gettin' Shirty with James McArthur

12 December 2018

Included in the official Crystal Palace programme every edition is an exclusive feature with a first-team player discussing the key shirts and kits throughout their lifetime and, if you haven't already seen it, we've now got the first ever piece here online.

James McArthur sat down with the programme at the beginning of this season to talk through his life in kits, and you can see what he had to say below.

Which was your first shirt as a kid?

It would have been a Rangers one. I can’t quite remember how old I was, but I remember it had the sponsor CR Smith on the front. There was no name or number on the back!

What were you wearing on your professional debut?

When I was at Hamilton Academical, I made my pro debut in January 2005 against Ross County in a home game, so I got the wear the red and white hoops for the first time.

Which is the most special shirt you've worn?

It’s a shame it’s not a Palace one, but I’d have to say the one from the 2011 FA Cup final for Wigan Athletic. It’s not hanging up in my house, it’s in a box somewhere so it’s something I’ll cherish when I retire.

Best player you've swapped shirts with?

Luka Modric runs him close, but I’d probably say the best is Sergio Aguero, which was also from the FA Cup final. I swapped my second half shirt with his, so I have one of each.

Who was the last player you swapped with?

I’d say it was someone like Graeme Dorrans or one of my friends from the game. He would have been playing for Norwich City when we swapped.

Which is the best shirt of all time?

It’s hard to say of all-time because there have been so many classics, but perhaps the nicest I’ve ever worn is the new Palace away strip – I really like it!
