Crystal Palace Under-23s recorded a good victory over Queens Park Rangers today, with Eagles midfielder Gio McGregor stealing the show as the match wound to a close with an astonishing goal in the final few minutes of play.
But despite securing Palace's win by netting their second goal, McGregor suggested that his side had been on top throughout. He said: "From the beginning, we started well and were on top of them. They didn't really do anything to hurt us so I feel like we stayed in the game and showed our quality on the ball."
The afternoon's other goalscorer was Levi Lumeka, who bagged early on having been slipped through by Kian Flanagan. On his relationship with his Palace teammates, McGregor said: "Levi is a good player, he moans a lot! But he's a good player, he's very effective in behind and we use that to our advantage week in, week out.
"We've [Flanagan and McGregor] been playing together for three years now, we've built a relationship. I know his strengths and he knows my strengths."
But even if those around him enjoyed a good performance, nothing came close to trumping McGregor's last-minute screamer.
He reflected on the goal, saying modestly: "Funnily enough, everyone says that I don't shoot enough! Hopefully I can shoot more and score more goals. It was a good strike."
And then turning his attention from today's clash to the rest of the season, McGregor expressed a quiet confidence in his side's abilities and ambitions going forward.
"We need to finish strong," he said, "win as many games as possible. Obviously the performances matter but we need to finish strong and be as high in the table as possible."
