Besiktas's European history
Founded in 1903, Beşiktaş are one of Turkish football's traditional powerhouses, alongside Istanbul rivals Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe. They are also the country's oldest registered sports club.
The Black Eagles have a proud European history, reaching the European Cup quarter-finals in 1986/87 before progressing to the last eight of the UEFA Cup in their centenary season of 2002/03, when they also claimed the Turkish league title under Romanian manager Mircea Lucescu.
Beşiktaş returned to the Europa League quarter-finals in 2016/17, eventually bowing out to Lyon on penalties after a 2-2 aggregate draw.
Their finest European campaign came the following season, when they became the first Turkish club to top a UEFA Champions League group unbeaten, collecting 14 points against Porto, RB Leipzig and Monaco. Their run ended in the last 16, however, with Bayern Munich proving too strong.
