Crystal Palace’s Academy scholars recently took part in an interactive finance workshop led by Dr Chris Platt and chartered accountant Hayley Lucas of Athena Accountants, exploring the realities of building a long-term career both on and off the pitch.
Using 300 jelly babies to demonstrate just how difficult it is to reach and remain at the top of the professional game, the scholars were challenged to think beyond their first contract and consider how they can sustain a career at the highest level.
The session then turned to managing money, with the players discussing spending, saving and investing – and how the decisions they make in their late teens could shape their financial future.
