The Young Eagles sit third in Group E on three points, behind Newport on four and Plymouth Argyle on five. Victory in south Wales would guarantee Palace a place in the knockout stages for the first time in Academy history.
Powell’s side began their campaign with a 2-1 win over Swindon Town, Caleb Kporha and Seb Williams finding the net, before a 5-1 defeat at Plymouth left them needing a result against Newport.
Now known as the Jersey Mike’s Trophy, the competition brings together 48 League One and League Two clubs and 16 Category One academies, giving young players the chance to test themselves against senior professionals.
Palace have competed in every edition since 2021/22 but are yet to progress beyond the group stage.
Powell is relishing the opportunity to change that record, with his side knowing exactly what is required on Tuesday night.
“We’ve got one game left and we know we need to go to Newport and win,” he said.
“It’s a tough challenge, as these games always are, but it’s a great opportunity for the boys to test themselves and give us a chance to make Academy history by reaching the knockout stages.”
