With the main 90 minutes complete, Palace and Freiburg played an additional 30-minute training game to provide further minutes in the legs ahead of the new Premier League season. Four changes were made, including the introduction of Under-21s full-back Dean Benamar.
Palace created the better openings early on, with Daniel Muñoz’s cross picking out Evann Guessand, whose header sailed just over. Guessand then threaded through Matheus França, but the ball was just behind the forward.
Derry Scherhant broke through on the stroke of the interval to lift the ball over Walter Benítez and give Freiburg the lead.
Both sides continued to use the second half to build fitness, with Nketiah going close late on as his effort from distance grazed the crossbar, but there was to be no further change to the scoreline.
