The draw
The draw for the third round of the Carabao Cup will take place live on Sky Sports following the conclusion of the televised second-round tie between Preston North End and Everton on Wednesday (26th August) evening.
With that match set to kick off at 20:00 BST, should penalties be avoided, it is likely the draw will begin at around 22:15.
The fixtures
Third-round matches are due to be played in the weeks commencing Monday 7th and 14th September, with fixtures in the Champions League and Europa League also scheduled during those two weeks respectively.
This means that Palace's third-round match is guaranteed to take place in the week commencing Monday 7th September.
To ensure there is no clash of fixture dates, conditions will be implemented during the draw to ensure a club participating in the Champions League does not draw a club participating in the Europa League, allowing Round Three fixtures to take place in the alternate week.
And whilst Brighton & Hove Albion are also involved in Europe this season in the UEFA Conference League, that competition does not begin until October, so they are not among the eight teams who cannot meet in Round Three.
Overall, the third round will include 32 clubs – 23 winners from Round Two, and then the nine Premier League clubs involved in UEFA competitions this season.
Once again, any matches which end in a draw at this stage will go straight to penalties; extra-time is only used in the Carabao Cup from the semi-finals onwards. In addition, no draw conditions will be required for the Round Four draw onwards.
Draw procedure
As per previous seasons, the third-round draw will be made in two separate stages, with the first stage involving the eight teams – Palace, Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Bournemouth and Sunderland – in the Champions League and Europa League.
Before the main draw, there will be a pre-draw to decide whether each of these eight teams will be at home or away.
Then, in the main draw, the first eight ties will involve those Champions League and Europa League clubs, including Palace, with their home or away positions having already been determined; each will be drawn against a club from a separate bowl containing the remaining teams.
Once those eight ties have been drawn, the final eight ties will be drawn as normal.
