Born in Aversa in southern Italy to Nigerian parents, but raised in Genoa in the north-west, the young Honest Ahanor’s first taste of football came in the latter, whilst his family were living in an accommodation centre in a converted abbey.
When a football school started up on a small seven-a-side pitch next door during his early years, Ahanor approached the organisers and asked to play – setting in motion a course of events which would see him join Genoa’s academy as an eight-year-old.
Incredibly, given his experience of top-level football already, those events were just 10 years ago.
Ahanor was by all accounts a rapid developer, blessed with impressive physicality – but also technical ability – which saw him shine in a variety of positions on the left side of defence at youth level, winning the 2023/24 U18s Scudetto title with Genoa and providing an assist in the final.
Just a handful of months later, Ahanor was propelled into senior Serie A football by head coach Alberto Gilardino – starting at home to the mighty Juventus in September 2024.
At just 16 years, 7 months and 5 days old, he was the first player born in 2008 to start a Serie A match, and played 69 minutes up against Argentina international Nicolas Gonzalez.
Injuries disrupted his season therefeafter but Ahanor did well enough to make five further senior appearances for Genoa that season, three of them starts.
The last of those came at left-back against title winners Napoli at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium – producing an assist in a 2-2 draw.
Such promise earned Ahanor a move to Atalanta in the summer of 2025 – and there, his rapid progress continued, with 35 appearances in all competitions despite his tender years – helping his team to 12 clean sheets.
Among them, Ahanor played nine times in the UEFA Champions League last season, taking on attackers from the likes of eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.
By the end of the season, Ahanor had not only received his first Italy Under-21s call-up – and cap – in March, but subsequently played his first two matches for the senior side, keeping clean sheets in wins over Luxembourg and Greece back in June.
Physically imposing, but also technically adept, Ahanor is widely viewed as one of the next wave of potentially outstanding Italian defenders.
Citing fellow left footer Paolo Maldini as his hero, the 18-year-old has been deployed throughout his fledgling career as both a left centre-back and a left-back – and even at times a left wing-back – suiting him perfectly for a variety of roles.
Scout reports also widely praise Ahanor’s pace and athleticism in carrying the ball forwards, as well as his ability to – when required – step out from the back and play raking passes into the channels.
