The new Premier League season stands on the horizon – and if you're looking for optimism to draw from the summer, then the Eagles' impressive numbers don’t stop with the above…

### The numbers

Since 2013, the Eagles have won 41 out of 74 pre-season clashes (including one penalty shoot-out victory), drawing 16 times and losing just 17.

That records includes Palace XIs - largely made up of Development prospects, with the option to include first-team players - which account for a large number of those defeats.

Along the way, Palace have scored a mighty **156** **goals** – averaging over two per game – and **conceded** **94** in that time, recording a goal difference of +62.

Of particular note were the three aforementioned unbeaten pre-season campaigns: in 2018/19 and 2020/21, under Roy Hodgson, and 2024/25, under the guidance of Glasner.

Our biggest win in that time? A 13-1 win over Austrian outfit Grazer AK (GAK) away from home in July 2014.

Glasner shares thoughts on Crawley win ahead of tour

#### “It’s important that many players got more minutes”

The first-half was really good. I'm a little bit disappointed – the second-half we lost the concentration, the focus, so we gave them three goals, and it's never good when you concede three goals. 

Yeah, we scored nice goals, but it's important that many players get more minutes, especially now. Joa \[Andersen\] and Chris \[Richards\] coming back after their deserved vacation are just four days into training and they played 60 minutes both.

It’s challenging, but yeah, we will do the best out of it. 

#### “The most important thing is all the players are fit”

First of all, the most important thing is that all the players are fit. I hope it's nothing serious with Cheick \[Doucouré\] today, but it looks not serious. All others could do every training session, every game. 

With parts, I'm happy, especially today, how we created chances, how we've scored the goals. But also we have to be honest with four games in pre-season, we always conceded a goal.

That's what doesn't make me happy because we can't expect to always score two, three or four goals in every single game, so we have to be more consequent in our defending – and this will be the topic for the next weeks.

#### “He’s a great character”

\[Chadi Riad\] is a great character and you can see it in every game: very ambitious, very high quality and talent. He does really well. 

He is a very good character and he’s also integrated pretty well, and the same with Daichi Kamada – I think everyone could see today what a fantastic football player he is. 

Both are very important signings for us and both will get many minutes in the season, for sure.

#### “It’s important what he shows on the pitch”

It's not important if I know him \[Kamada\] well or not – it's important what he shows on the pitch. 

That's what I could see today: working for the team in defence and always creating moments in offence with quick play, scoring goals, creating situations. That's what he's very intelligent in.

He’s a very intelligent player, so he can solve tight situations with one touch. And he's always there where we want to be.

But also, for him, it's always a competition with all the other players and, at the end, the best will play.

#### “We’ll use it as a training week”

We use it \[the tour\] as a regular training week. In the game on Wednesday, every player will get 45 minutes, and then we'll see at the end of the trip who is fit. 

It will be a different temperature, more humidity and then, of course, travelling long.

Palace continued their pre-season preparations with a trip to Broadfield to face Crawley Town - their final pre-season game in the UK [before heading to the United States on tour](https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/announcement/crystal-palace-return-united-states-2024-pre-season-tour/).

Manager Oliver Glasner named a strong side ahead of the game, with Joachim Andersen and Chris Richards returning from international duty to feature at the heart of the defence.

The Eagles got off to the best possible start - taking the lead after 90 seconds. A misplaced pass from Crawley went straight to Daichi Kamada, who headed it into the path of Odsonne Edouard in the box.

The striker made no mistake to finish past Joe Wollacott in the Crawley goal for the first, and within a blink of an eye it was 2-0. Edouard turned provider this time after pressing from the front to set up Jesurun Rak-Sakyi for a simple finish. 

It was all Palace, capitalising on Crawley mistakes early on. With just over 10 minutes on the clock, Kamada netted Palace’s third. An excellent ball over the top from Chris Richards was taken out of the air by Kamada and with just three touches he took it around the ‘keeper to finish into an empty net.

Crawley were looking to find a way back into the game and nearly did so through Jay Williams. His header at the far post was well met, but Sam Johnstone in the Palace goal was equal to it.

Palace continued their dominance as they were looking for a fourth, to equal the result of the pre-season game against Crawley last season, and it eventually came through a stunning Rak-Sakyi effort.

Edouard again provided the assist for Rak-Sakyi, who raced towards the edge of the six-yard box and slotted it in on his right foot across the face of goal.

Palace rattled the crossbar through Edouard in search of a fifth, while Nathaniel Clyne and Tyrick Mitchell almost combined with a glancing cross across the face of goal.

After the break, the hosts got back into the game through a stunning Rushian Hepburn-Murphy strike from 25-yards out. 

This looked as though it was only a consolation for the hosts, but they did claim another goal back on the hour-mark as Joachim Andersen unfortunately slipped to allow an easy effort for Hepburn-Murphy.

Shortly after coming on, Jordan Ayew netted Palace’s first goal of the second-half with a well-taken finish at the second attempt. He was played in behind by Jeffrey Schlupp, and after trying to dink the ‘keeper, he found the back of the net from close range.

Crawley then pulled another one back through former Palace U21s player Jack Roles, but Palace were quickly back down the other end looking for a sixth.

Naouirou Ahamada rattled the crossbar with a looping effort, while Ayew missed a golden chance for a sixth with the goal at his mercy.

Schlupp eventually found the sixth goal just before the final whistle. He was found through on goal by a brilliant Will Hughes ball and his first-time effort on his left foot found the bottom corner.

All in all it was a successful afternoon as the referee brought an end to proceedings shortly after Schlupp’s goal. Glasner and his side now turn their attention to the United States as they head out for pre-season tour.

### **The opposition**

For only the second time in Crawley’s history, promotion to the third tier of English football has been achieved, and this time they are hoping to make their stay a prolonged one.

They were certainly not favourites to go up at the start of the 2023/24 campaign, having survived by the skin of their teeth the previous season, with a victory over Hartlepool United in the run-in enough to keep them up when defeat would surely have spelled a return to the Conference and the loss of their Football League status.

Under Scott Lindsey, they made smart additions to the side, most notably Danilo Orsi from Grimsby Town. Orsi, who had never been a prolific scorer at that level and had netted just twice the previous season, scored 25 times in his debut campaign for the Red Devils as they clinched the final play-off place on the final day of the season.

MK Dons were swatted aside in the play-off semi-finals, helped by an Orsi hat-trick in Milton Keynes, to set up a final against Crewe Alexandra at Wembley.

Who was on the scoresheet on the big day? You guessed it. Crawley were promoted with a comfortable victory.

The move up to League One will be a major step up, however, and their prolific centre-forward has signed for Burton Albion, meaning reinforcements could be needed. No fewer than 12 new arrivals have signed already, with more to follow.

### **The boss**

Scott Lindsey has worked his way up the divisions, beginning his managerial career with Chatham Town in the Isthmian League, before moving to Swindon in 2022. He was just eight months into his new job before Crawley moved to appoint him as their new boss.

Just over a year ago, Palace made the same trip down to Broadfield to take on Crawley, and put on an attacking masterclass.

A number of Crystal Palace's international players, including defenders Joachim Andersen and Chris Richards, returned to training in South London on Tuesday following their summer exploits with their nations.
