Newcastle United U18 v Crystal Palace U18 (2026-01-22)

The young Eagles dominated large spells of the contest and made their control count when David Angibeaud opened the scoring from close range. Palace continued to press and were rewarded shortly after the break, as Benji Casey doubled the advantage with a well-taken finish.

Newcastle threatened a route back into the tie, but Palace ‘keeper Jack Mason produced an outstanding reaction save to preserve the clean sheet and halt any momentum. From there, the visitors pulled clear. Angibeaud tapped in his second of the evening before Casey completed the scoring to seal a commanding and deserved victory.

The FA Youth Cup Fifth Round draw was made on Friday (16th January), confirming that Palace will travel to Stevenage. Saturday 21st February is currently listed as a placeholder date and represents the latest the fixture can be played under competition rules, with the exact date yet to be agreed by both clubs.

Stevenage reached the fifth round for the first time in their history following a 3–1 win over Bolton Wanderers. Lenny Brown opened the scoring before Bolton equalised, but goals from Riley England and a late strike by Faith Mustafa secured progression for the Hertfordshire side.

Reflecting on the performance, Alonso was brimming with pride, particularly given the challenging weather conditions.

“It was really good – I’m buzzing with the team’s performance. To go through to the next round is brilliant. With this weather it was very tough, really difficult to play and keep the ball at times, but I think the boys understood the game plan very well and followed it perfectly. I’m really happy because I think we deserved it – every player played really well.”

Alonso also felt the win was the perfect response to Saturday’s 3–0 defeat against West Brom in the U18s Premier League South.

“The boys knew it – we didn’t deserve to win against West Brom because, in my opinion, we didn’t give our best. Today was really, really different. It was a lesson to take on, and the boys worked hard today. They deserved this result. We played as a team, and that was the difference.”

There were braces for both David Angibeaud and Benji Casey, with Alonso quick to praise his striking duo.

“Both are really good strikers. All of our strikers are doing well, but they are in a very good moment right now. To help the team with two goals makes a big difference. They are different profiles of players, but both are very good.”

Looking ahead to the next round and a tie against Stevenage, Alonso highlighted the importance of the competition.

“I’m so happy to be through. I know how important the FA Youth Cup is in England and for this club. We will play against Stevenage – I don’t know when yet – but for now we have other games, other cups and the league to focus on. When the moment comes, we will be ready.”

Alonso: I’m buzzing with the performance

Reflecting on the performance, Casey felt the team fully deserved their place in the next round despite the difficult conditions.

“I think overall it was a great team performance. Obviously, the conditions weren’t great – it was very rainy and the pitch was heavy – and Newcastle fought well. But I think we were the better team, especially in the first half.

“We played in their half, battled well to win second balls, pressed hard and created opportunities, particularly from crosses. Overall, it was a performance we deserved, and it was a good game for us.”

Casey grabbed a brace on the night and was asked which of his goals was his favourite, as well as how it felt to be back among the goals after stepping up to feature with the U21s and even the senior squad.

“For me, it was the second goal. I pulled myself away from the defenders and Stuart \[Oduro\] found me. From there it’s just instinct – cut inside and shoot – so it was a great goal for me.

“It’s also really good to be scoring again for the 18s. I’m happy to be back playing in the Youth Cup. Everyone wants to play in the FA Youth Cup, everyone wants to score in it and go on to reach the quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final. I’m very happy to be among the goals again and I hope to keep it going.”

The forward also showed resilience after missing a one-on-one early in the first half – similar to an opportunity he spurned against West Brom on Saturday – before converting his next two chances.

“Yeah, to be honest, I’ve missed a lot of one-on-ones – it’s part of being a striker. You’re not always going to score every opportunity. I was frustrated, but at half-time I spoke to myself and encouraged myself. I told myself there was still 45 minutes to go, just keep going and the opportunity will come.

“I focused on staying relaxed, being calm and being ready for the next chance – and that’s what I did.”

Looking ahead to the next round, Casey is already focused on the challenge posed by Stevenage.

“We hope to beat them, but obviously we don’t know much about them. They’ll be fighting because we’re a Premier League side, so we have to keep going, stay focused and keep working hard.”

Palace Under-18s entered the FA Youth Cup fourth-round determined to return to winning ways, following defeat to West Brom in our 2026 curtain-raiser – a result that saw the young Eagles relinquish top spot in the U18s Premier League South.

Newcastle, meanwhile, arrived in strong domestic form, sitting third in the U18s Premier League North with 25 points from 13 matches, just four points behind leaders Manchester City.

The Magpies also boast a proud FA Youth Cup pedigree, having lifted the trophy on two occasions – first in 1962 and again in 1985, when a side inspired by future England international Paul Gascoigne, alongside Joe Allon, secured their place in club folklore.

Javier Alonso made one change from the side that faced West Brom, with Daniel Owoade stepping in for the suspended Jacob Fasida, who was shown a red card for a late challenge against the Baggies. Oladotun Lamidi made way for Joel Drakes-Thomas on the bench, while Dylan Monk and Khyan Frazer-Williams were also included among the substitutes.

In extremely blustery – but thankfully dry – conditions at the exposed Whitley Park, proceedings began at a frantic, open pace. Newcastle dangerman Matheos Ferreira was the first to test the elements, trying his luck from distance, but his swirling effort flew straight down the throat of Jack Mason.

The early momentum soon swung in Palace’s favour. David Angibeaud pounced on a stray back pass and squared dangerously across the face of goal, but there was nobody arriving to apply the finishing touch. Moments later, Stuart Oduro went to ground just inside the penalty area – it looked a certain penalty – but the referee was unmoved and waved away the appeals.

A Charlie Walker-Smith long throw then sparked a pinball-like scramble inside the box, with Benji Casey almost carving out a shooting opportunity from just a few yards out. As the 20-minute mark approached, the young Eagles were well on top, Newcastle clinging on as wave after wave of Palace pressure rolled in.

The wind was beginning to wreak havoc, holding the ball up in the air and manufacturing chances for both sides out of nothing. Midway through the half, the Magpies started to show signs of threat at the other end – Michael Mills used his pace to get in behind, but Mason was alert and quick off his line to snuff out the danger.

After a brief spell of Newcastle probing, Palace again found some nice patterns of play, coming close to penetrating what was proving a resolute Newcastle backline. It felt like an important moment in the game – one where Palace will have wanted to make their pressure count.

Dean Benamar was causing real problems down the left flank, repeatedly whipping balls in behind and lashing efforts goalwards as Palace continued to push for the opener.

Eventually, the young Eagles received their just rewards on 29 minutes, and it was David Angibeaud who made the breakthrough. Jasper Judd’s inswinging corners had been causing problems in the build-up, and once again he delivered into a dangerous area. A pinball-like scramble ensued inside the box, before Angibeaud reacted quickest to rifle home from close range – his seventh goal in nine games.

Just minutes later, Palace almost doubled their advantage. Benji Casey raced in behind the Newcastle defence, but despite his tenacity, he was denied in a one-on-one situation.

As the half drew to a close, the Magpies began to turn the screw. Although they failed to seriously test Mason, they did fire into the side netting and forced Jasper Judd into a crucial clearance to remove a dangerous ball flashed across the face of goal. Palace, however, stood firm, and their defensive resolve paid dividends as they headed into the interval holding a slender one-goal advantage.

The rain worsened in the second half, beating down at some rate of knots. Palace nonetheless came out on the front foot, launching a barrage of set pieces early after the restart, with one Jasper Judd delivery nodded goalwards but well saved by the Magpies’ goalkeeper.

As the hour mark approached, the young Eagles gradually wrestled back control, moving the ball sharply and enjoying the lion’s share of possession.

Clear-cut chances were at a premium for both sides, however, as the contest developed into a cagey affair – crunching challenges flew in, the high presses were intense, and the rain continued to pour.

Midway through the second half, Newcastle began to show a few warning signs. Palace were pinned back in their own half for a spell as the Magpies enjoyed a period in the ascendancy, though without seriously troubling Mason.

Just as it seemed Newcastle were edging back into the contest, Palace struck a decisive second. Oduro picked up the ball just outside the penalty area and threaded a perfectly weighted pass through to Benji Casey. The forward showed composure to let it run before lashing a fierce finish into the roof of the net, leaving the goalkeeper helpless in the one-on-one.

Despite holding a two-goal advantage, Palace were briefly threatened when Newcastle came agonisingly close to halving the deficit, only for a superb reaction save from Mason to deny Mills’ half-volley.

That moment proved decisive. Palace flipped a switch and ran riot to put the tie beyond doubt. Dean Benamar surged down the left channel and arrowed a flat delivery across the face of goal for David Angibeaud to turn home into an empty net. Moments later it was four, as Stuart Oduro slipped Benji Casey in behind, the forward latching onto the through ball and flashing a strike past the onrushing goalkeeper.

The result seals our place in the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup, where we will travel to take on Stevenage. What a performance!

### Oliver Webber

A Palace academy goalkeeper from 2016, Webber gained senior experience through loans at Whyteleafe, Greenwich Borough and Dover Athletic before turning professional in 2019. He departed the club in 2022 and returned to Glentoran, later moving on to Woking and Slough Town. He continues his career in non-league football.

### Tyrick Mitchell

After joining from Brentford in 2016, Mitchell rose rapidly through the ranks to become a Palace first-team regular. He has since established himself as one of the Premier League’s most consistent full-backs, earned senior England honours and was part of the Palace side that lifted the FA Cup in 2024/25.

### Andrew Demby

Demby spent time on loan at several non-league clubs during his Palace scholarship before departing at Under-18 level. He went on to feature for the likes of Dorking Wanderers, South Park and Sevenoaks Town, most recently playing for Redhill.

### Ehizojie Onoabhagbe

After leaving Palace at Under-18 level, Onoabhagbe continued his senior career in non-league football, with spells at Braintree Town and, more recently, Coggeshall Town and Basildon United.

### Kyle Lynch

Lynch was part of the Palace Academy setup before moving into senior football following his release. He joined Hackney Wick FC, a community-focused semi-professional club founded to provide opportunities for players released from academies.

### Sean Robertson

A Palace Academy player from Under-11s through to Under-21s, Robertson turned professional with Forest Green Rovers in 2022. He later had spells at Crewe Alexandra, Derry City and Shamrock Rovers, continuing his career across England and Ireland.

### Nya Kirby

A highly regarded attacking midfielder in his youth, Kirby featured prominently for Palace and England’s youth sides and scored in the 2018 Youth Cup tie. After loan spells at Blackpool and Tranmere Rovers, he departed Palace in 2022 and has since played for Oxford City and AFC Croydon Athletic, where he remains involved in the game.

### James Daly

Daly joined Palace aged 14 and progressed to a professional contract, featuring regularly for the Under-23s. He has since enjoyed a steady EFL and non-league career with Bristol Rovers, Stevenage, Woking, Harrogate Town and Aldershot Town, and now represents Yeovil Town.

### Brandon Aveiro

Aveiro signed a professional deal with Palace in 2018 and was a regular at youth level. After spells with QPR and Slough Town, the attacking midfielder is currently without a club, having last featured in non-league football.

### Joseph Hungbo

After turning professional at Palace, Hungbo moved on to Watford and later enjoyed loan spells across England and Scotland, notably winning SPFL Goal of the Month with Ross County. He has since played in Germany with Nürnberg and returned to England, where he currently represents Wigan Athletic.

Crystal Palace Under-18s face Newcastle United once again in the FA Youth Cup fourth round on Thursday evening, renewing a fixture last contested in 2018.

The new year began with a setback for Palace, as we were beaten 3-1 by an in-form West Bromwich Albion side in the U18s Premier League South – a performance Alonso believes his side can quickly learn from.

“Of course, we can play better,” Alonso admitted. “I don’t think we played as a team and we didn’t give our best. The players need to push themselves more in the next game because, in my opinion, that level wasn’t good enough.

“I know the quality of this group and I’m sure we can improve. We created chances, but it wasn’t enough. We can and we must be better.”

Development is the priority in an Academy

Despite recent results, the Academy continues to thrive. Four graduates – Dean Benamar, George King, Benji Casey and Joel Drakes-Thomas – made their senior debuts towards the end of 2025 and have remained involved with the first team, alongside Kaden Rodney and Zach Marsh. Charlie Walker-Smith and Jacob Fasida have also stepped up to Under-21s level, providing both opportunity and challenge for Alonso as players move between squads.

“First of all, I’m really happy,” he said. “We are here to develop players. Of course, results are important, but development is the priority in an Academy.

“The boys are now operating at another level. Some are with the first team, some with the Under-21s, and they are improving all the time. They are good boys and, for the Newcastle game, I’m confident they will be ready.”

Emotion control is very important in games like this

Palace booked their place in the Fourth Round with an impressive 3-0 victory over Bradford City under the lights at Selhurst Park – an occasion Alonso believes played a big role in the performance.

“For the boys, playing at Selhurst Park for the first time is always special,” he said. “I remember they were a little nervous in the first half, but we improved as the game went on.

“That experience helps a lot. Emotion control is very important in games like this, and I think we learned from that night.”

Reflecting on the FA Youth Cup more broadly, Alonso highlighted how knockout football brings a different edge compared to league fixtures.

“It’s always special because it’s knockout football. You have to give everything,” he explained. “The league is different – you play every Saturday – but this is one game and that changes the mentality.

“For a big game against Newcastle, mentality and playing as a team are the most important things. The FA Cup is special in England, and the boys feel that. The staff feel it too – we’re all excited.”

Looking ahead to Thursday’s opponents, Alonso expects a tough test against a talented Newcastle side.

“They are a really good team,” he said. “We’ve watched them and they have good players and a strong side.

“We just need to stay focused on how we want to play. We have a few days to prepare and, if we improve as a team like we have before, I’m sure we’ll be fine.”

Crystal Palace Under-18s Head Coach Javier Alonso has been reflecting on recent learnings, the significance of the FA Youth Cup, and the challenge ahead as the young Eagles prepare to face Newcastle United in a highly anticipated Fourth Round tie on Thursday evening (22nd January, 19:00 GMT).

Alonso: Mentality and playing as a team are most important against Newcastle

Despite the competition’s illustrious 78-year history, the two clubs are no strangers to one another at youth level, having crossed paths on three previous occasions in recent years. 

Each meeting has brought its own drama, memories and future stars – and this latest chapter promises to be no different…

Palace’s pedigree in the FA Youth Cup is well established. The young Eagles have contested 28 Fourth Round ties, progressing to the semi-finals on two occasions and reaching four finals – lifting the trophy twice along the way. Newcastle now stand in the young Eagles' path once more, for the fourth time in Youth Cup history.

### The First Encounter – Third Round, 2000

The inaugural meeting between Palace and Newcastle came in the Third Round on 30th November 2000, played away from home.

Goals from Jonny Williams and Amoako forced a replay, which took place just over two weeks later on 16th December. That second meeting proved far more decisive. Williams was in irresistible form, firing a memorable hat-trick, while Gwillim added another to seal an emphatic 4-1 victory and mark the young Eagles’ first Youth Cup triumph over the Magpies.

### A Tough Night in the North – Sixth Round, 2010

A decade later, Palace once again made the journey north, this time for a Sixth Round clash. On the night, the young Eagles fell to a 4-2 defeat, despite a spirited display. A Goldsmith penalty and a thunderous strike from Sekajja provided moments of hope, but ultimately served only as consolations.

That fixture, however, is remembered for more than just the scoreline. Among those involved was a young Wilfried Zaha, destined to become a Palace legend, alongside Alex Wynter – now a familiar face within the Academy setup, working as Player Care Officer for U9s through to U16s. A reminder of how the Youth Cup often provides a glimpse into the future.

### Heartbreak at Home – Fourth Round, 2018

The most recent meeting came in January 2018, fittingly also in the Fourth Round. This time, Palace were the hosts, but the outcome was cruel. In a tightly contested encounter, the young Eagles were edged out 3-2 by Newcastle.

Goals from Nya Kirby and Tariq Ossai kept Palace firmly in the contest, while current first-team regular Tyrick Mitchell featured in what was another showcase of emerging talent – but it wasn’t quite enough on the night.

### Looking Ahead

So far, the record stands at one win and two defeats for Palace against Newcastle in the Youth Cup. Yet, as history has shown, these meetings rarely fall short of expectation.

With another Fourth Round tie looming, Palace will be eager to write a new chapter – one that levels the ledger and keeps our Youth Cup dreams alive. If past encounters are anything to go by, supporters can expect a compelling clash filled with the promise of tomorrow’s stars.

As with every preview, we began by asking Oduro for his assessment of the 2025/26 campaign, both collectively and on a personal level. 

After a frustrating 2024/25 season limited by reduced minutes, the forward has become a key figure under Javier Alonso this term, featuring regularly and repaying that faith with 10 goals and two assists in 16 appearances.

“I think as a team we’re in a really good position,” Oduro said. “We’ve been playing good football and we’re still competing at the top end of the league – I think we’re second at the moment.

“Obviously we’re doing well in the Youth Cup, the Premier League Cup as well, and even the Under-17s have been doing really well. Collectively, the whole group is in a good place. Individually, I feel like I’ve been doing well, scoring and assisting, and I just want to keep that going.”

Palace’s return to action in 2026 didn’t go quite to plan, with a 3-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion ending the young Eagles’ run at the top of the U18s Premier League South. For Oduro, the focus is firmly on responding in the right way.

“I think we started very slowly,” he admitted. “We didn’t really play as a team, so that’s something we need to improve straight away. We have to start strong and play together because Newcastle will give their best – it’s the Youth Cup. We have to match that, and if we do, I believe we’ll win.”

Oduro was the hero in the third round, coming off the bench to score a late brace and secure Palace’s passage into the last 32 – a moment he remembers fondly.

“It felt really good to help the team win,” he said. “That’s the most important thing. I just want to give my best for the team whenever I’m on the pitch, so I was really happy. Now it’s about going again on Thursday and trying to help the team win once more.”

It's the biggest competition at this level, so everyone is buzzing

The FA Youth Cup often brings a different feel to a regular league fixture, and Oduro is relishing the occasion.

“There’s definitely more preparation,” he explained. “Playing at night is completely different to playing at 11 or 12 o’clock, so there’s more excitement. It’s the biggest competition at this level, so everyone is buzzing. The energy is really high – we just need to stay focused and be ready.”

When the draw was made, Oduro immediately began sizing up the challenge ahead.

“I looked at where they are in the league,” he said. “I think they’re third, so I knew it would be a tough game. They’re going to give everything, and we have to do the same.

“If we start strong and play as a team, I’m confident we’ll come out on top.”

And with a long journey to the north-east ahead of Thursday’s tie, how will the forward pass the time?

“Probably just listening to music,” he smiled. “I’ve got a few albums I need to get through. Just relaxing, staying calm and getting ready for the game.”

Ahead of Thursday’s highly anticipated FA Youth Cup fourth-round tie away to Newcastle United (22nd January), we caught up with Under-18s forward Stuart Oduro, who reflected on the importance of responding to defeat last time out, his match-winning impact in the previous round, and the challenge posed by the Magpies.

Oduro: We have to start strong and play together

The young Eagles will travel to **Whitley Park** to face the young Magpies on **Thursday, 22nd January**, with kick-off scheduled for **19:00 GMT**.

Palace secured their place in the fourth round with an impressive 3–0 victory over Bradford City under the lights at Selhurst Park. Substitute Stuart Oduro proved decisive on a wet and windy evening (Friday, 5th December), coming off the bench to score a late quick-fire brace and seal progression.

Newcastle booked their spot at the same stage last week, recording a commanding 5–2 win over Portsmouth. A hat-trick from Matheos Ferreira and a brace from Michael Mills ensured an emphatic third-round success for Chris Moore’s side.

The Magpies have lifted the FA Youth Cup twice in their history, first in 1962 and again in 1985, when a side featuring Paul Gascoigne claimed the trophy. More recently, Newcastle reached the quarter-finals in 2016/17 and again in 2020/21, narrowly missing out on further progress on both occasions.

Newcastle currently sit third in the U18 Premier League North, with 25 points, trailing only Manchester City and Manchester United.

If the tie is level after 90 minutes, 30 minutes of extra time will be played. Should the score remain unchanged, the match will be decided by a penalty shoot-out.

### Palace’s proud FA Youth Cup legacy

Since its inception in the 1952/53 season, the FA Youth Cup has consistently been held in high regard by youth teams nationwide, maintaining this position despite significant changes in youth football over the past 70 years.

The structure closely resembles that of the FA Cup, the world’s oldest domestic cup competition, providing non-league clubs with a chance to enter their youth teams in the qualifying stages.

Palace have won the tournament back-to-back in 1977 and 1978, with the likes of Vince Hilaire, Kenny Sansom and Terry Fenwick all involved.
