This season, Palace’s European ambitions stretch beyond the first team, as the U21s test themselves against elite opposition from across the continent in the International Cup.

The young Eagles are competing in a strong Group B featuring Valencia CF, Juventus FC, FC Nordsjælland, and Borussia Mönchengladbach – a line-up that promises not to disappoint.

Palace opened their campaign with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Valencia earlier this month, but responded superbly to claim their first win of the 2025/26 tournament with a statement 3-1 victory over Italian giants Juventus.

Darren Powell's side were electric in the first half. Adler Nascimento broke the deadlock after 11 minutes with a cushioned volley from a tight angle, before Seb Williams doubled the advantage with a crisp half-volley into the near corner. Benji Casey capped off a dominant opening period with his first goal for the club, putting Palace firmly in control.

The second half was more evenly contested, and although Juventus pulled one back late on, the young Eagles held their nerve – thanks in part to a brilliant goal-line block from George King – to secure a deserved win that sees them fifth in Group B on three points.

Next up for Powell's side  – FC Nordsjælland. The Danish club made history last season as the first team from Denmark invited to the competition, and performed impressively.

They claimed wins over Manchester United, Norwich City and Liverpool before reaching the quarter-finals, where they were eventually knocked out by champions Nottingham Forest. Their return for the 25/26 edition has been equally eye catching.

Beginning their campaign earlier than Palace, they opened in late September with a commanding 3–0 victory at West Brom. The Tigers followed that with another disciplined performance away at Fulham, where a moment of quality from Levy Nene secured a tight 1–0 success.

Following tonight’s meeting, Palace will round off their Group B fixtures against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Wednesday 21st January (19:00 GMT).

Casey capped off a dominant first-half display, reacting quickest to volley home from close range after an inswinging corner was kept alive at the back post by Zach Marsh.

“I think it was a great team performance from everyone," he said after the match. "We worked hard and pressed hard as well. I know Juventus are a big team, but we’re Palace – we can play football as well.

“It was an overall good team performance, good communication from everyone. I think we all played well and did our part.”

On scoring his first goal for the Under-21s, Casey said: “I feel great. I’ve been wanting this for a very long time. I haven’t been in many games or scored yet, but I kept believing. All the coaches have helped me out, and it’s finally come – I’m really happy about it.”

Having recently earned more starts after a series of substitute appearances, Casey spoke about relishing the opportunity: “It’s been great. The coaches have believed in me, and I’m just making sure I take my opportunity when I have it.

“That’s today – my first goal. I hope many more come for me, but I’m just really happy with everything right now.”

Palace raced into a 3–0 half-time lead through goals from Adler Nascimento, Seb Williams and Benji Casey, before holding firm after the break to secure a deserved win.

Powell was quick to praise his team’s start: “It was a brilliant start. It was a bit helter-skelter at the beginning – it could have been 1-0, could have been 2-2 – but the energy and application from the boys were brilliant.

“I said before the game, no matter what age group it is, there aren’t many times you get to play against Juventus. So, let’s get amongst them, let’s get close to them, but also play football as well – which I believe we really did in the first half.

“Disappointing we didn’t score more, if I’m honest, to kill the game. But coming in at 3-0 at half-time against Juventus is never a bad score, though you’ve got to be diligent for the second half.”

Reflecting on recent form, Powell admitted this could be one of the team’s most complete performances so far.

“I liked the Villa one away,” he said. “What I said to the boys afterwards was we’ve just got to be consistent with it. Obviously, the Newcastle performance here wasn’t at our level – we just fell off a little.

“From the Villa performance, I thought it was really good. Then we played against Valencia, which was a hard one to take – a mistake and we missed a penalty as well – but the performance was good.

“And tonight was a really good performance, but we’ve just got to be consistent with it.”

It’s a start today – three points on the board – and now we’ve got two more games to keep ourselves alive in the competition.

Powell stressed the importance of getting off the mark in the Premier League International Cup after the frustrations of the opening defeat to Valencia.

“Yes, obviously, because losing to Valencia, you don’t want to lose ground in it,” he said. “We had three games left in the group, so my main focus was: can we get nine points from them?

“It’s a start today – three points on the board – and now we’ve got two more games to keep ourselves alive in the competition. Then we look forward to the next one.”

It’s massively pleasing for Benji because he works so hard.

There was also a first U21s goal for Benji Casey, and a welcome return to the squad for Dean Benamar. Powell was full of praise for both, as well as the squad’s collective effort.

“Over the last couple of weeks we’ve played a lot of games, and I said to the boys, everyone’s going to be needed. It’s not about the starting XI – it’s a squad thing.

“We played Stoke, rotated, and the boys who came in did really well. Changed it again today with fresh legs, and it worked.

"It’s massively pleasing for Benji because he works so hard. Coming from the 18s to the 21s is a big gulf, but his application in the game was superb – he works his socks off. All you want for someone who works that hard is for him to get his goal.

“He and Zach played really well together. Deano coming back was great too, and we’re still waiting on Craig to return.

“There are a few boys to come back, but as long as we can keep giving everyone minutes over the next few weeks, it’ll help top them up and get everyone as fit as possible. Naming those two in particular – Deano coming back and Benji getting his first goal – I’ve just got to commend all the boys for putting in a real shift in the last few weeks.”

Palace entered the fixture having endured a difficult start to their Premier League International Cup campaign. The young Eagles had fallen to defeat in their only match of the competition to date, with Rodrigo Gamon's well-timed run proving the difference between the sides.

Juventus, meanwhile, came into the contest after a mixed opening to their campaign. The Italian side had lost their curtain-raiser against Leicester City U21s but responded with an impressive 4-2 victory over West Brom in their second group match.

Ahead of kick-off, the Old Lady sat fifth in Group B with three points – level with the Baggies and Fulham – while Palace occupied second-from-bottom with no points on the board, though they held a game in hand over all of their group opponents.

Powell made four changes to the side that had drawn 2-2 with Stoke City. Jasper Judd made way for Adler Nascimento at wing-back, with the U18s skipper omitted from the squad entirely. Dylan Reid replaced Kaden Rodney in midfield, Seb Williams returned in place of Joel Drakes-Thomas – who was away on international duty – and Benji Casey partnered Zach Marsh up front.

On the bench, Rylan Brownlie was included, while Dean Benamar made a welcome return to the matchday squad after only resuming training the previous week.

Unlike against Valencia, the game got off to an electric, end-to-end start. Jackson Izquierdo, enjoying consecutive starts in goal, was quick off his line to deny the Juventus attacker one-on-one with a diving save. Zach Marsh almost latched onto a lofted pass in behind and went down claiming a penalty, but his appeals were waved away.

Seb Williams then pulled the ball back to Reid, who collected down the left channel before unleashing a low drive towards the far corner, only for Matteo Fuscaldo to make a solid stop. Reid’s right-flank set piece followed, whipped into the box with venom. Browne’s close-range volley cannoned off the bar, and Ahamada’s follow-up was blocked. Juventus broke quickly after, and Izquierdo was once again forced into a superb one-on-one save.

Just six minutes in, both sides had already created more chances than Palace had against Valencia.

Having withstood the early pressure, Palace took the lead courtesy of Adler Nascimento. Reid, heavily involved up to this stage, delivered a stunning outside-of-the-boot cross, which the onrushing Nascimento turned home brilliantly at the back post with a side-foot volley from a tight angle into the near corner.

Buoyed by the goal and growing in confidence, Joe Gibbard drove forward, weaving through a sea of Juventus shirts with ease, only to be denied by a sliding Fuscaldo from just a few yards out.

The young Eagles soon doubled their advantage as Nascimento’s long throw was flicked on and found Williams at the back post, who rifled it into the near corner – a composed finish under a bit of pressure.

By midway through the first half, Powell could not have asked for more. Juventus, however, responded with slick passing and posed consistent problems in the final third, keeping the Palace defence alert.

The match lost a bit of its tempo as we entered the final third, with the hosts cruising and the Old Lady unable to respond. Thirty minutes in, Nascimento came agonisingly close to a second goal, but his low driven effort from the right side of the penalty area skimmed inches wide of the far post.

A few minutes later, Palace continued to press. Ahamada carried the ball upfield and unleashed a stinging strike from distance, forcing the 'keeper into a smart save. Juventus had survived a succession of shots and crosses, but were clearly under pressure.

In the 38th minute, Casey made it three! Reid’s inswinging corner was kept alive by Marsh at the back post, who volleyed it back across to Casey. The young striker side-footed into the net and wheeled away in jubilation, celebrating his first goal for the U21s.

Despite a three-goal cushion, the young Eagles remained hungry, continuing to pile on the pressure as Juventus struggled for confidence. The final action of the half saw Gibbard go to ground in the box, but once again, appeals for a penalty were waved away.

An excellent half of football drew to a close, and Palace headed into the break in dreamland.

The visitors began the second half as the team in the ascendancy. Izquierdo was called into action with a routine stop at his near post, and a few pinball-like scrambles tested the Palace defence. Play was briefly halted for an injury, but a resolute Palace backline continued to absorb the attacking pressure once play got back underway.

Passing the midway point of the second half, chances were few and far between for either side. Possession remained evenly matched, and Palace looked comfortable, showing no sign of conceding.

Seventy minutes in, substitute Benamar was catching the eye down the left flank, enjoying his runs with the ball and showing real tenacity. The full-back whipped a teasing delivery into the penalty area, finding Casey, whose volley flashed just wide of the post – though the assistant’s flag was raised for offside.

As the match entered its final stages, Casey made an excellent, aggressive run in behind and almost caught the 'keeper out with a clever swivelled effort. Moments later, the striker departed to rapturous applause after a fantastic shift leading the line.

Though Palace looked the more likely to add a fourth, Juventus managed to pull one back through Silvano Biggi with ten minutes to go – a scrappy goal that came after a flurry of ricochets and pinball inside the box, before the ball was finally turned home. 

The pendulum swung in favour of the Old Lady as Juventus pushed to make it a nervy finale. George King produced an outstanding last-ditch block on the line to deny them a second goal, keeping Palace’s cushion intact. 

Wave after wave of late pressure was repelled by a resolute young Eagles defence, as Palace held firm to secure their first win of their 2025/26 Premier League International Cup campaign.

Palace’s victory lifts them to fourth in Group B on three points, with a game in hand over most of the eight teams in the group. Powell’s side now have a short break before returning to Premier League International Cup action against FC Nordsjælland on Wednesday, 26th November (19:00 GMT).

### Eagle-Eyed Review

Palace U21s have had a challenging start to their Premier League International Cup campaign, currently sitting second from bottom in Group B with zero points, though they hold a game in hand over all group opponents.

Their opener came against Valencia at the VBS Community Stadium on 4th November, where a well-timed run from Rodrigo Gamon allowed the Spanish side to take a 1-0 lead.

Palace finished the first half strongly, creating a series of chances, including a near first-time strike from George King, a missed penalty from Zach Marsh, and a late effort from substitute David Obou, but couldn’t find the breakthrough.

Back in domestic Premier League 2 Division One action, Palace earned a dramatic 2-2 draw against Stoke on 7th November. Stoke struck early through Adriel Walker, with Favour Fawunmi doubling the visitors’ advantage.

Palace responded after the break, with Naouirou Ahamada pulling one back and the young Eagles pressing for an equaliser. Deep into stoppage time, Joel Drakes-Thomas was fouled in the box, allowing Kaden Rodney to thunder a stoppage-time penalty off the crossbar to secure a deserved point.

Juventus Next Gen, also known as Juve NG, serve as the U21/reserve team of Serie A giants Juventus and compete in Serie C Group B, playing their home matches at the Stadio Giuseppe Moccagatta in Alessandria. Established in 2018 as Juventus U23, the team was rebranded as Juventus Next Gen in 2022, following the reintroduction of reserve sides in Italian football.

Despite their status as a development team, Juve NG have already made a mark in Italian football. They won the Coppa Italia Serie C in 2019–20 under Fabio Pecchia and have regularly competed near the top of Serie C, although promotion to Serie A remains off-limits due to regulations for reserve sides. The team has also seen managerial changes in recent years, with Massimo Brambilla returning as coach in 2024 after a brief spell under Paolo Montero, and has guided the side back into playoff contention in Serie C.

In Europe, Juventus Next Gen have had a mixed start to their Premier League International Cup campaign. They lost their opener to Leicester City U21s, despite taking the lead through 19-year-old Luca Amaradio. Kian Pennant’s quick equaliser for Leicester was followed by a second goal from Diego Pugno, and the visitors eventually ran out 2-1 winners.

They bounced back in their second group match, however, with a 4-2 defeat of West Bromwich Albion U21s. Jack Bray scored twice for the Baggies’ hosts, but a calamitous own goal from Juventus’ Bruno Martinez Crous set the tone, with late efforts from Rio Parmar sealing the victory.

Currently, Juventus Next Gen sit fifth in Group B with three points, level with West Brom and Fulham, while Palace are second from bottom with zero points but hold a game in hand over all group opponents. Their U21 squad blends youth and experience, giving Palace a stern test in Italy, with players eager to impress in front of scouts and coaches alike.

### Team news

Juventus Next Gen will be without Macca, Makiobo, Cudrig, Scaglia, and Puczka, who is sidelined due to a suspension. However, the side are bolstered with the return of Guerra from injury.

Additionally, first-team players Pedro Felipe and Rouhi joined Brambilla’s squad at the weekend, so could feature for the Bianconeri in their Premier League International Cup campaign.

Juventus Next Gen returned to winning ways at the Stadio Giuseppe Moccagatta with a solid and composed performance against Forlì, marking their first success since 19 October.

The 19-year-old forward signed his first professional contract with Juventus in 2023, having lit up the junior ranks with the Juventus Under-17 side, scoring seven goals.

Pugno was then promoted to the Primavera team, scoring five goals last season, with another six to his name by the conclusion of 2025.

He earned his debut for the first team against Lecce in December last year.

His tenure has been marked by consistent performance and a proven capacity to balance player development with competitive results, making him a pivotal figure in the Next Gen project.

### About the Premier League International Cup

The Premier League International Cup is an elite Under-21 competition featuring the top 16 finishers from Premier League 2 and 16 invited international sides from across Europe.

This year’s edition promises to be more competitive than ever, with Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund making their debuts, and Paris Saint-Germain returning to the tournament.

Running throughout the season alongside league and domestic fixtures, the tournament offers a fantastic platform for our homegrown talent to gain invaluable international experience in a highly competitive setting.

The tournament features 32 teams, divided into four groups of eight. Each group consists of four English sides and four European clubs, with every English team facing the European teams once. Importantly, the English sides will not play each other in the group stage.

All of Palace’s group games will be played at Sutton United’s VBS Community Stadium. Our Group B rivals include Fulham, Leicester City, and West Bromwich Albion, but again the Young Eagles will only face the four European invitees.

### Palace's history in the tournament

Palace’s recent history in this competition is impressive. After finishing runners-up in 2022/23 - [falling to a 3-1 defeat to Jong PSV at Selhurst Park](https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/match-reports/crystal-palace-jong-psv-premier-league-international-cup-final-2024/) - the Young Eagles bounced back the following year by beating the same opponents 1-0 to make amends and lift the trophy.

However, last season saw an early exit with a narrow 2-1 defeat to RB Leipzig in the group stage.

The Premier League International Cup isn’t Palace U21s’ only challenge this season. They’ll also compete in Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy, where they face tough trips against [League One and League Two sides](https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/announcement/crystal-palace-vertu-efl-trophy-fixtures-group-2025-26-wimbledon-bromley-stevenage/) in the latter.
