Valencia took the lead on 20 minutes through Rodrigo Gamon, who broke the line with a well-timed run and cool finish. Despite the setback, the young Eagles finished the half on top, pressing for an equaliser.

After the break, Palace continued to push. George King went inches wide from Kaden Rodney’s pinpoint cross, before Zach Marsh saw his penalty flash agonisingly past the post. Substitute David Obou also came close late on, cutting inside and curling just wide of the far corner.

Despite a series of promising chances, Powell’s side were edged out by the narrowest of margins. The result leaves Palace seventh in their group, though they still hold a game in hand over some rivals.

No one wants to lose, but I’ve got to look at the bigger picture 

“Tough – it was a tough one. I said to the lads in the dressing room, they \[Valencia\] didn’t create too many chances. A good side, Valencia, but they didn’t create too many.

"If I’m honest, especially in the first half, we had the best of the chances, but it’s those little details and bits of quality that we didn’t produce in the key moments. You get those moments, and you have to take them.

"In the second half we were on the front foot. We changed the shape, pressed higher, and again created chances. No one wants to lose, but I’ve got to look at the bigger picture – I thought we played well, performed well. We just needed that bit of luck – we missed the penalty, had the ‘keeper’s mistake – but that’s football.

"The pleasing thing was that they kept going, heads never dropped, and they worked hard again. Tough to take, yes, but there were a lot of positives.”

Powell was particularly keen to highlight his team’s resilience and attitude:

“The boys put the work in. They stuck with it and didn’t let their heads drop at any point.

"Chasing the game is never easy, but they never gave in – that’s what pleased me most. Their belief meant we created more chances. On another day, we just needed that extra bit of quality."

Darren Powell’s side came into their Premier League International Cup opener full of confidence, having recorded a comfortable 2–0 victory over Aston Villa in the league – a result that saw the young Eagles return to winning ways.

Valencia’s B team, known as VCF Mestalla, had experienced a difficult start to their Segunda Federación campaign – Spain’s fourth tier – sitting second from bottom with just six points from eight matches.

In the Premier League International Cup, however, Mestalla had shown signs of improvement. After suffering a stoppage-time defeat to Fulham in their opening fixture, they responded impressively with a 3–1 victory over Leicester City.

Powell made just two changes to the side that beat Villa, with Kaden Rodney replacing Nairou Ahamada in midfield, while Jake Grante came in late for an injured Luke Browne.

It was a blustery evening at the VBS, with light rain and drizzle leaving water spraying up off the surface.

Both sides saw plenty of the ball in the early exchanges, but it was the visitors who created the first real opening. Pol Trigueros whipped in a teasing cross that found the outstretched boot of Alexander Gurendal, whose close-range stab was comfortably gathered by Harry Lee straight down his throat.

As expected, Valencia moved the ball confidently, but they struggled to break down Powell’s well-drilled backline, who remained disciplined and compact in their shape. Frustration began to creep in for Los Che, leading to a series of speculative long-range efforts that sailed harmlessly over the bar.

Approaching the 15-minute mark, Adler Nascimento curled a pinpoint delivery into the penalty area, where the onrushing Benji Casey appeared to be bundled over. The appeals were perhaps more half-hearted than they should have been, and the loose ball ricocheted off Marsh into the 'keeper’s grasp. Moments later, a long-range effort from Valencia was comfortably gathered by Lee.

On 20 minutes, Rodrigo Gamon gave Valencia the lead after capitalising on a lofted pass over the top.

However, the momentum shifted midway through the half as the young Eagles pushed for an equaliser. A tenacious Seb Williams dispossessed his marker down the left channel, drove into the penalty area, and was denied one-on-one from a tight angle.

Marsh pressured the 'keeper into a mistake, the ball dropping kindly for him in front of an empty net – but Valencia’s defenders scrambled back to clear their lines.

Casey and Marsh were continually looking to get in behind as the half entered its final third, but the ball seemed to evade the striking duo at crucial moments. At the other end, Los Che struggled to create anything meaningful, with only a non-threatening looping header and a long-range effort bothering Lee.

On the stroke of half-time, Dylan Reid skipped into the penalty area, but his clever give-and-go with Marsh was claimed by the ‘keeper. Marsh then sent a warning sign to Valencia with a sight of goal, lashing an effort over the bar. The best opportunity came when our No.9 squared to Reid, whose side-footed strike was well saved by a diving Raul Jiminez. 

Palace’s brightest moments came from pressing high and forcing turnovers, demonstrating their energy and organisation. The young Eagles went into the break on the ascendancy, but it was a crucial first 45 minutes for Powell, with his side trailing by a single goal.

Valencia endured a set-piece onslaught early in the second half as Palace pressed from the outset. However, the young Eagles’ rhythm was repeatedly disrupted, with the visitiors winning a few controversial free-kicks.

Ten minutes in, Lee reacted sharply to deny Mario Gonzalez’s low drive. At the other end, Rodney’s excellent touch down the right channel set him up to deliver a whipped cross that found George King, whose side-footed effort went just inches wide of the equaliser.

On the hour, Casey drove into the penalty area and slipped the ball through to Marsh, who was brought down by the onrushing ‘keeper. The referee didn’t hesitate to point to the spot. Marsh stepped up, with everyone at Sutton expecting the net to rattle – after all, he has seven goals in ten games – but he fired the wrong side of the post.

The referee continued to frustrate as Nascimento’s whipped delivery was punched clear, and Joe Gibbard reacted quickly to the follow-up but rifled over as the whistle went for a free-kick.

On 70 minutes, Powell introduced fresh attacking options from the bench, bringing on David Obou and Asher Agbinone, with Casey making way after enjoying consecutive starts for the U21s.

Obou burst into life, leaving defenders twisting and turning on the left of the penalty area, though he couldn’t quite create a shooting opportunity. With ten minutes remaining, he drifted inside and came agonisingly close to picking out the far corner – just inches away.

In the dying embers, Grante went to ground following what appeared to be a late challenge, but the referee waved away the appeals.

Five minutes were added, and despite a strong push, the young Eagles were narrowly beaten after a hard-fought contest. The result leaves Powell’s side seventh of eight, though they retain a game in hand over some rivals. Next up is a Premier League Two clash against Stoke (Friday, 7th November, 12:00 GMT), where Palace will be looking to return to winning ways.

## About the Premier League International Cup

The Premier League International Cup is an elite U21 competition featuring the top 16 finishers from Premier League 2 and 16 invited international sides from across Europe.

This year’s edition promises to be more competitive than ever, with Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund making their debuts, and Paris Saint-Germain returning to the tournament.

Running throughout the season alongside league and domestic fixtures, the tournament offers a fantastic platform for our homegrown talent to gain invaluable international experience in a highly competitive setting.

The tournament features 32 teams, divided into four groups of eight. Each group consists of four English sides and four European clubs, with every English team facing the European teams once. Importantly, the English sides will not play each other in the group stage.

All of Palace’s group games will be played at Sutton United’s VBS Community Stadium. Our Group B rivals include Fulham, Leicester City, and West Bromwich Albion, but again the young Eagles will only face the four European invitees.

## Palace's history in the tournament

Palace’s recent history in this competition is impressive. After finishing runners-up in 2022/23 - [falling to a 3-1 defeat to Jong PSV at Selhurst Park](https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/match-reports/crystal-palace-jong-psv-premier-league-international-cup-final-2024/) - the young Eagles bounced back the following year by [beating the same opponents 1-0 ](https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/announcement/crystal-palace-u21s-premier-league-international-cup-champions/)to make amends and lift the trophy.

However, last season saw an early exit with a narrow 2-1 defeat to RB Leipzig in the group stage.

## The competition so far

Though Crystal Palace are yet to begin their Premier League International Cup campaign, the competition is already well underway across the other groups.

In Group A, Wolves currently sit top of the table thanks to their superior goal difference over Real Madrid. Despite suffering a narrow 1–0 defeat to the Spanish giants, Wolves bounced back with a hard-fought 1–1 draw against RB Leipzig and a convincing 2–0 win over Jong PSV. 

Madrid, meanwhile, occupy second place, having played one game fewer. They edged past Wolves in their opener but were held to a frustrating 1–1 draw by Southampton. At the other end of the table, Jong PSV remain bottom after losing their only fixture so far.

Group B, which includes Palace, is finely balanced. FC Nordsjaelland, Valencia B, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Fulham, Juventus, and West Brom are all level on three points. Juventus and Valencia have played twice, while West Brom have completed three matches. Leicester City, still without a point after two games, sit at the foot of the standings.

In Group C, NK Dinamo Zagreb are the early pacesetters with six points from their opening matches. Every other side – Real Sociedad B, Benfica B, Newcastle, Brighton, PSG, Chelsea, and Nottingham Forest – are yet to register a point. Nottingham and Chelsea have each played once so far.

Finally, in Group D, Leeds United lead the way after winning both of their opening fixtures against Sporting CP and Athletic Bilbao. Manchester United are second, having maintained a 100% record with victory in their only match – also against Bilbao, who remain bottom after consecutive defeats.

## Valencia CF Academy Preview

Few academies in Europe command the same respect as Valencia CF’s. Known for producing technically gifted, intelligent footballers, the Academy at Paterna is regarded among the continent’s elite. Its success is reflected not only in trophies but, more importantly, in the number of players who progress to professional football.

According to the CIES Football Observatory, Valencia are the third Spanish club – behind only Barcelona and Real Madrid – with the most homegrown players competing professionally. A total of 38 Valencia-trained footballers are currently active in 49 leagues worldwide, a testament to the club’s enduring production line. 

Over the past seven years, Valencia have consistently ranked among Europe’s top 10 academies for the number of homegrown players in the five major leagues (England, Spain, Germany, Italy, and France).

Since the official opening of the Ciudad Deportiva in 1992, 122 academy graduates have made their first-team debut for Los Che after featuring for VCF Mestalla, the club’s reserve side. The most recent to do so – Alejandro Panach, Lucas Núñez, and Marc Jurado – made their senior bows in this season’s Copa del Rey, marking another milestone for the Academy.

For every young player, the motto “From Paterna to Mestalla” is a daily inspiration. A mural bearing those words lines the path to the training pitches, decorated with the names of academy legends: Gaizka Mendieta, David Albelda, David Silva, Jordi Alba, Isco, Carlos Soler, Kang In Lee, Ferran Torres, and current first-teamers José Luis Gayà, Javi Guerra, and Diego López. Each serves as proof of the pathway’s strength and possibility.

This season, the Academy continues to nurture international talent, with 18 players representing their countries. Among them, Alain Gómez, Vicent Abril, and Raúl Jiménez featured in the U20 World Cup in Chile, while Ismail El Aoud appeared at the U17 World Cup in Qatar.

## VCF Mestalla

VCF Mestalla, Valencia’s B team, compete in Spain’s Segunda Federación (Group III) – the fourth tier of Spanish football, featuring 90 teams split across five regional groups. Each group winner earns automatic promotion to the Primera Federación, while the next four enter play-offs for the remaining promotion spots. Reserve teams, however, may only be promoted if their senior side is one division above. The bottom five teams are relegated, with four additional sides facing a play-off to avoid the drop.

This season, VCF Mestalla have endured a challenging start, sitting second from bottom with six points from eight games. Only CD Ibiza-Pitiusas sit below them, while Barça Atlètic lead the table. Yet there have been positive signs: a 2–1 victory over Ibiza and a 1–1 draw with Porreres show progress, and the team’s confidence is slowly returning.

In the Premier League International Cup – a competition they are contesting for a fourth consecutive year – Mestalla suffered a stoppage-time defeat to Fulham in their opening fixture but responded superbly with a 3–1 win over Leicester City. In 2022–23, they reached the semi-finals of this tournament, narrowly losing on penalties to Palace, and last season they advanced to the quarter-finals unbeaten in their group.

## Team and Style

Miguel Ángel Angulo’s likely XI features Abril, Caro, Navarro, Jurado, Guilabert, Trigui, Fontanet, Aimar, Prevedini, Mario, and Víctor Jr. – a side built on possession, technical precision, and attacking intent. The group is youthful, energetic, and full of potential, though still adapting to the demands of senior football.

After their recent 1–1 draw with Porreres, Angulo expressed both frustration and faith. “We dominated the ball and deserved more,” he said. “We must be more clinical in both boxes. The players are young and will make mistakes, but they are improving and gaining confidence. Once we cut out individual errors, we will grow into a more solid, brave team.”

## Key Player: Jaume Durà

At just 21, Jaume Durà already embodies the identity of VCF Mestalla. Born in El Palomar near Albaida, Durà joined Valencia in 2018 from FEBO Ontinyent and quickly rose through the ranks. A technically gifted midfielder with vision, maturity, and leadership beyond his years, he has become captain and the heartbeat of the team.

Durà’s performances at youth level attracted interest from top Spanish and European clubs, prompting Valencia to secure his future the moment he turned 16. His rise was foreshadowed in La Liga Promises four years ago, when he scored five goals in four games and marked himself as one of the brightest prospects in Spanish football.

Coach Angulo is full of praise: “He gives us so many options. He can play wide or inside, combines well, and is brave on the ball. We’re managing his return from injury carefully, but he’s crucial for us – a player we fully believe in.”

## The Coach: Miguel Ángel Angulo

A legend at Valencia CF, Angulo remains the most decorated player in the club’s history. The Asturian began coaching within the Academy in 2012/13, working his way through the youth system before taking charge of VCF Mestalla. Now entering his fifth season as head coach, he signed a new two-year deal last summer, reaffirming the club’s trust in his vision.

Angulo has built a team that reflects the values that defined his own playing career: intelligence, humility, and ambition. His commitment to developing young players is central to Valencia’s philosophy, ensuring that every match for Mestalla is not just about points, but about preparing the next generation for Mestalla itself.

Crystal Palace open their Premier League International Cup campaign against Spanish giants Valencia CF – one of Europe’s most respected academies. Based at Paterna, Valencia are renowned for developing technically gifted players, with over 120 graduates progressing to the first team since 1992, including David Silva, Jordi Alba, and Ferran Torres. Led by club legend Miguel Ángel Angulo, VCF Mestalla continue to embody the club’s proud motto: “From Paterna to Mestalla.”

This season, it’s not just the first team flying the flag in Europe, as our U21s prepare to face elite opposition from across the continent in their International Cup campaign.

Palace will compete in Group B of this year’s tournament alongside Valencia CF, Juventus FC, FC Nordsjælland, and Borussia Mönchengladbach – a strong lineup promising exciting challenges and top-quality football.

First up, Valencia. The Spanish side boast one of Europe’s most productive academies, recently ranked third in Spain for the number of homegrown players competing in professional football – behind only Barcelona and Real Madrid, according to the CIES Football Observatory.

Since opening their Ciudad Deportiva training complex in 1992, more than 120 academy graduates have gone on to debut for Valencia’s first team, while dozens more now play across major leagues worldwide.

Among their current crop are several youth internationals, including Alain Gómez, Vicent Abril, and Raúl Jiménez – all of whom featured in this year’s U-20 World Cup in Chile – and Ismail El Aoud, who represented his country at the U-17 World Cup in Qatar.

Following Tuesday’s clash with Los Che, Palace will continue their Group B fixtures against Juventus FC (Wednesday, 12th November, 19:00 GMT) and FC Nordsjælland (Wednesday, 26th November, 19:00 GMT).

### About the Premier League International Cup

The Premier League International Cup is an elite Under-21 competition featuring the top 16 finishers from Premier League 2 and 16 invited international sides from across Europe.

This year’s edition promises to be more competitive than ever, with Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund making their debuts, and Paris Saint-Germain returning to the tournament.

Running throughout the season alongside league and domestic fixtures, the tournament offers a fantastic platform for our homegrown talent to gain invaluable international experience in a highly competitive setting.

The tournament features 32 teams, divided into four groups of eight. Each group consists of four English sides and four European clubs, with every English team facing the European teams once. Importantly, the English sides will not play each other in the group stage.

All of Palace’s group games will be played at Sutton United’s VBS Community Stadium. Our Group B rivals include Fulham, Leicester City, and West Bromwich Albion, but again the Young Eagles will only face the four European invitees.

### Palace's history in the tournament

Palace’s recent history in this competition is impressive. After finishing runners-up in 2022/23 - [falling to a 3-1 defeat to Jong PSV at Selhurst Park](https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/match-reports/crystal-palace-jong-psv-premier-league-international-cup-final-2024/) - the Young Eagles bounced back the following year by beating the same opponents 1-0 to make amends and lift the trophy.

However, last season saw an early exit with a narrow 2-1 defeat to RB Leipzig in the group stage.

The Premier League International Cup isn’t Palace U21s’ only challenge this season. They’ll also compete in Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy, where they face tough trips against [League One and League Two sides](https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/announcement/crystal-palace-vertu-efl-trophy-fixtures-group-2025-26-wimbledon-bromley-stevenage/) in the latter.
