Holloway: Pre-Sheffield Wednesday

22 February 2013

Ian Holloway gave his pre-match views to the Palace website ahead of his side's visit to Sheffield Wednesday this Saturday. Here's what he had to say:

On recent form:

It feels like we’ve turned the corner. Everybody has a little bit of an up and down and we couldn’t seem to see through a win or we’d have a bad start. I think the lads have really enjoyed having people back in, KG is back and give us a lot of belief. We’ve had a spell where we’ve had a few injured but I think the additions of Jazz Richards, Stephen Dobbie, Kev Phillips and Jacob Butterfield have really helped the group. Alex Nimely’s been unlucky but Jedinak and KG back as well has really given the lads belief. Hopefully we can get momentum and a push going and who’s to say where that might take us.

On promotion hopes:

The crowd as well they’ve been absolutely terrific and behind us. Watford away when we were 2-0 down they were brilliant, it's times like that when you realise how much everyone wants a bit of success. We’re working towards it, that’s all I can say. What I’m trying to do is work, build and get levels of belief, effort and professionalism to compete in the Premier League. We’re having a real decent season, not many clubs go from finishing 17th to become first or second in one season. Who’s to say we couldn’t, we’re in with a chance but we’re up in the top and we’re having a go. I’m thoroughly enjoying what the new lads have given the group and the belief in this group now.

On winning away:

They (Sheffield Wednesday) are on an unbeaten run that’s got them out of the bottom three. They had a great start to the season so it’s not going to be an easy thing. Touch wood I’ve been fortunate in my managerial career there so far. It’s really important that you set your stall out. I think we’ve been reliant on our wingers a little bit too much. Away from home the longer the season goes on the harder it is for them to keep producing and the easier it is for other teams to stop them. What we’ve got to do is go up there and be professional and start winning away from home. I think we’ve got the right elements in the group now to cause them a problem but it’s that resilience and mental strength you need.

On Sheffield Wednesday:

Dave’s teams are always very competitive and he got them promoted last season and they started on a bit of a roll. The squad is forever changing; I think he’s made two great additions in Leroy Lita and Connor Wickham so that will give them a bit of firepower. I know what I’m expecting, a really tough game, the crowd there are sensational if the team’s doing well so I want to quieten that crowd down first. It’s all about trying to imposing our way of playing on the opposition and in the last four games I’ve insisted on that. I’m looking at us and what we’re going to do and I can see us get more and more polished at what I want. It’s starting to be in the lads' fabric rather than the old way of doing it. Now we need to keep some of that and maybe we’ve lost a bit of our resilience away from home so I’ll be drumming that into them.

On injuries:

Wilfried has a dead leg but will be the only absentee from Tuesday’s squad.
