Tugby's Tips: West Brom

7 February 2014

After picking two consecutive winners by tipping Palace to win by one goal against both Stoke City and Hull City, former bookmaker and Palace Programme editor Luke Tugby looks to make it a hat-trick this weekend, as he talks us through his selections for Saturday’s game against West Bromwich Albion.

Crystal Palace are the bookies favourites to beat West Brom this weekend and record what would be a third consecutive home win in the Premier League – a feat they have not achieved since December 1992. Tony Pulis’ men are pretty well-priced at 6/4 to take all three points, with the Baggies available at 15/8. The draw is on offer at 21/10.

The hosts have a very solid record against West Brom of late, having lost just once in their last seven meetings in all competitions – that 2-0 defeat coming in their Premier League meeting at The Hawthorns in November last year. But Palace went to the midlands two months later in the FA Cup and reversed that scoreline to come away with victory.

Incidentally, exactly two goals have been scored in four of the last five meetings between these two sides and you can get 9/4 on the same number of goals being scored at Selhurst this weekend. Palace are available at 9/1 to win 2-0 – a good shout considering the Eagles home defensive record.

But if the hosts are to bag two goals on Saturday, who is going to provide them? New boys Thomas Ince and Joe Ledley will give Pulis’ side much more of an attacking threat and both are well-priced to score on their debuts this weekend. Ince is available at 9/1 to score first and 3/1 to find the net at any time, while Ledley is 16/1 to break the deadlock and 11/2 to score in 90 minutes.

Jason Puncheon has been in good goal-scoring form since the turn of the year though and he perhaps represents the best value at 8/1 to score first, or 11/4 to find the target at any time. Another Puncheon 1-0 scorecast, incidentally, will return a tempting 33/1.

Palace’s last two home victories have come to nil – and they have kept five clean sheets in their last seven Premier League games at Selhurst Park. The hosts are 11/4 to keep that run going by winning to nil on Saturday.

Tugby’s Tip of the Day: Thomas Ince will be keen to prove himself on the big stage and his pace could cause West Brom plenty of problems on Saturday. The 3/1 on offer for him to bag a debut goal is my tip of the day.

Value Bet of the Day: Another new signing, Joe Ledley, to open the scoring. At 16/1, the goal-scoring midfielder is well worth a punt.

Long Shot of the Day: Glenn Murray is back in contention and could well be named in Tony Pulis’ matchday squad this weekend after a long injury lay-off. He’s 66/1 to mark his return with a hat-trick.
