Alan Pardew hailed his side for their "pivotal" win over Newcastle United at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon.
Coming off the back of a 1-0 home defeat to Sunderland on Monday night, the Eagles recovered to hammer the Magpies 5-1 in SE25 - the club's biggest ever Premier League win.
Pardew felt that his team's response to Monday's defeat and the hammer in which they saw off Steve McClaren's side could prove "pivotal" to the Eagles' chances of finishing in the top eight.
"We were really on it tonight," he said.
"It was a kind of pivotal game for us today, whoever the opposition was. It was a pivotal game in our season.
"Were we going to become a mid-table team and just drift around there or were we going to put ourselves back in contention with those top eight sides?
"The top eight sides in the Premier League are really, really good sides. They're the sides we're competing with, we've put ourselves back in there with the Evertons and the Tottenhams as well."
