International Round Up: McArthur Scores

8 September 2015

Eagles midfielder James McArthur nearly helped his country cause an upset in their Euro 2016 qualifier last night, when he fired in a dramatic equaliser for Scotland against World Champions Germany at Hampden Park.

The Scots fell to a dramatic 3-2 defeat at home to the Germans, who were inspired to victory by the enigmatic Thomas Mueller, with the Bayern Munich forward hitting the first two goals before creating Ilkay Guendogan's winner.

McArthur - who had been left out of Gordon Strachan's starting eleven for their shock defeat away to Georgia last week - put in a good performance against the best national side in the world, playing the full 90 minutes in Glasgow.

His excellent half-volley to level the scores at 2-2 just before half-time gave the home side hope, but a neat move by the Germans after the restart resulted in Guendogan slotting the winning goal in off the post, allowing the World Champions to tighten their grip at the top of the group.
