Benteke: We Are In Good Shape

25 September 2016

Jermain Defoe had given the home side a two goal lead and Sunderland looked to be heading to a first win of the season but an immediate response from Joe Ledley put Crystal Palace back in the game. After a James McArthur header had put the game on level terms, it was to be an injury time winner from Christian Benteke that sent the south Londoners home with all three points.

Benteke ws delighted to leave the north-east for the second time this month with maximum points.

"This result is a massive win for us all, we knew it was not going to be easy here but we showed, especially in the second half, some great character as a team to come back in the game. We did well in the first half but conceded a sloppy goal but then going 2-0 down we had to do something and we knew we could come back."

It was not until the 94th minute that the points were sealed but the striker was prepared to wait to take his chance in front of goal.

"You have to be patient in this game and I knew that my chance would come and when I saw the cross coming into the box I knew I had to score.  As soon as I knew we had a free kick at that position I said to Chungy to put the ball on the penalty spot and I was confident I could get the goal and that is what happened.

We are in good shape, coming here on the back of a couple of wins we knew we wanted to win and we now must keep going like that."

It's early days in his Palace career but the 25 year old has started in the best way for a striker arriving at a new club.

"The manager and Chairman did everything to bring me here and therefore I have to give them something back and the best way of doing that is to do my best and by scoring goals. Today was a successful one for me and the team.

Since the draw against Bournemouth we have shown what we are about but we must continue to do that and today showed why English football is the best league in the world because from the first minute to the last everything is possible and we go away with all three points."
