Palace climbed to top spot in the fledgling Under-18 Professional Development League as they continued their unbeaten start to the campaign with a 2-1 win at Bristol City.
The game was played in atrocious weather conditions, with kick-off taking place amongst heavy rain, but Palace would enjoy the best of the opportunities during the 90 minutes, with the pace of Jason Lokilo and Victor Fundi causing plenty of problems for the Robins.
The conditions played their part in restricting the chances for either side, but Palace took the lead 10 minutes after the restart when a ball over the top allowed Fundi to stretch his legs, and he played a neat return pass into Kian Flanagan’s path. The goalkeeper smothered the chance but the ball ran free to
James Daly who was then brought down by the shot-stopper inside the box, and Lokilo stepped up to fire in his first of the season from the spot.
However City managed to find an equaliser when a dangerous corner was headed in, but Palace went straight up the other end and Fundi hit the post before Francis Jno Baptiste was introduced from the bench, who was able to put the Eagles back ahead when Jalen Jones won a header at the back post and nodded the ball down perfectly for the attacker to sweep into the net on the turn.
There were plenty of chances for Palace to move further ahead and Fundi was once again denied a goal when he rounded the goalkeeper and saw his shot cleared off the line, before Baptiste saw another good chance saved and Lokilo would also be denied by a clearance off the whitewash, however the win was claimed and moved Ken Gillard’s boys to the table’s summit.
