The second half saw a number of chances for the home side but they failed to get back in the game and their best chance saw Damien Delaney having a shot turned over the bar by goalkeeper Tom Heaton.
Damien was one of two changes to the starting eleven with Patrick Van Aanholt being the other, as he started his first game since he recovered from an ankle injury at West Bromwich Albion.
The 26 year-old left back was a frustrated figure after the game as he reflected on a disappointing afternoon in the search for maximum points.
“After this defeat we are naturally disappointed but we move on and we have three more games to play and we must keep going.
“We started the game not as well as we have been doing and then conceded a goal and we then find ourselves chasing the match to get back in it but the goals just wouldn't come to get us back in the game.
“We knew how Burnley would set up and how they would look to play and have worked on it in the week but unfortunately it didn’t happen for us today and it's frustrating to come away from the game with nothing.“
The side go into the final three games knowing one of those will be their final home match of the season against Hull City, a side one place below them, but he speaks on behalf of the squad who have the attitude of wanting to get the required points target as soon as possible.
“We still need another win to get to 41 points and be safe and that must be our target as we move on from today."
