Big Sam: We Need A Perfect Performance

5 May 2017

Sam Allardyce believes that from the final matches another three points would secure the club’s Premier League status.

Two away games in Manchester and a home match against Hull City remain but the Palace boss believes his group of players can deal with the pressure that comes with these matches.

"One more win certainly does it and obviously our disappointing result (Burnley) in a difficult week was one we didn't want to happen but it did. On the back of that the week before we were on cloud, people say 9 but I would have said 999, having beaten Liverpool away.

"It's fight or fly at this stage of the season; if you take the pressure well you fight, if you don't take the pressure well you run away. So we've got to have a lot of fighters on Saturday who are willing and prepared to roll their sleeves up and fight for every ball, for every possession and fight Man City to try and achieve a result."

Allardyce is delighted with the way the side have responded in recent weeks with wins against Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool but knows that the final league position after 38 games will show where they deserve to be.

"You're only as good as your league position shows you and our league position shows us that we've been exceptionally good in the last two months. We're in the top half of the league table in the last two months, top four even I think. What we have to do now is try to finish it off as quickly as we can."

Reflecting on the home defeat against Burnley the boss spoke about an area of the team’s game that needs to improve against the Saturday lunchtime opponents, Manchester City,

"We need to defend correctly again. Our two pieces against Burnley were ridiculous and we lost two goals because of it. They weren't two beautifully created goals from Burnley they were born on us losing possession in our own half which we've been extremely good at not doing that in the last couple of months.

"To see it happen in such a big game was disappointing but it's happened and what we've got to do is cut that type of error out, particularly against Manchester City who are the best team in the league at winning the ball back in the opposition's half.

"They are the best team defensively in your half, they shut you down and win more balls there than any other team in the Premier League.  We need a perfect performance from all 11 to stand a chance."
